In Service: 1995-present day
The Gotengo is the flagship of the Global Defence Force. It is a flying multipurpose warship designed to combat xenomorphic threats in almost any possible environment, including airborne, aquatic and subterranean. The GDF first conceived the idea of a ship like the Gotengo as far back as the late 1960's, but it was not until 1995 that this idea was finally realised. It quickly proved itself to be one of the most formidable weapons in the GDF's arsenal, battling the likes of Manda, Ebirah and even Godzilla himself. While presented to the world as an anti-Kaiju weapon, secretly the Gotengo had also been built specifically to fight the Cryog. In the event that they ever returned, humanity would need a ship capable of going toe-to-toe with the alien's own vessels. the Gotengo toured the world to aid GDF and UN forces in bringing an end to the numerous conflicts. In doing so, the ship became a symbol of hope and peace to many. Douglas Gordon served aboard the ship during this time and would go on to become its most famous (or infamous) Captain. Under his command, the Gotengo has been badly damaged numerous times carrying out his reckless plans, though it has always come out victorious and fortunately the GDF has always been able to repair it. The ship was upgraded extensively in preparation for the return of the Angels and has since taken part in several battles. In addition to providing heavy fire support for the Mechas and the Evas, the Gotengo also acts as a mobile command station for the GDF, allowing Captain Gordon or even Commander Namikawa to directly observe the ongoing battle from an elevated position and quickly provide new orders. Even as threats to humanity bear down from all sides, the heroic actions of the Gotengo and its crew continue to inspire a generation.
