I couldn't focus on eating when Brayden was right beside me. Gracie and I had put our purses with Tess and Hannah so he could have room to sit once he got here, and when the girls had drawn my attention to him, it was like my mind could only concentrate on him. The way his eyes light up when he talks about things he loves the most, the way he has little baby dimples when he smiles real big. I steadily pinched myself under the table, forcing myself to realize that this wasn't a dream.
"So wait, I'm a little confused. You're only twenty-two, why're you graduating tomorrow?" He looked adorable with a frown gracing his lips. I smiled, stopping to take a sip of my root beer.
"Hannah and I took summer classes, so we're graduating earlier than Gracie and Tess," I explained. It took us forever, but all the nights spent without sleep and probably an overdose of coffee had finally paid off. I could finally turn my part time job into a full time job, with better pay.
"Wow, I feel bad now sitting next to you smarty pants, since I wasted away my summers doing stupid shit," he laughed, nudging his arm into mine. Sparks.
"Well, I found out my freshmen year that if I paid attention to the assignment, it wasn't hard or long," I said, rubbing my finger up and down my glass to make the condensation slide down to the table.
"What did you major in?" he asks, still not taking his eyes off me. The only time he took his eyes off of me tonight was when he looked at his menu, then it all turned into twenty questions while the girls went back and forth between listening to us and talking to each other.
"Graphic Design," I answered proudly. I had Graphic Design as a class in high school, and it was the easiest thing I had ever done. And I was pretty good at it, too.
"Oh, maybe you could make me a business card one day then," he said. His phone beeped for the seventh time since he'd gotten here. He continued to ignore it.
"What did you major in?" I asked. We had been asking pretty simple questions all night, it sort of felt like we were feeling each other's personality out.
"Physical therapy," he replied smoothly, leaning away from the table as our waiter brought us our food.
"Mac and Cheese with honey pepper chicken tenders?" The waiter asked expectantly. I raised my hand and he set it down in front of me, calling out the next order.
"Double crunch shrimp?" He grabbed the plate, again wondering whose it was.
"That's me," Brayden said, moving his glass out of the way. He unwrapped his silverware, setting his napkin out to the side.
"I didn't know you liked shrimp," I said, wrinkling my nose. I have hated seafood my whole life, the taste and texture enough to make me spit it out immediately.
"Yea well, there's a lot you don't know about each other Sawyer, you just met," Tess spit out. She grabbed the ketchup, making a mess as she squirted it out of the bottle onto her fries.
"Tess, just shut up and eat, let her enjoy herself," Hannah said, trying not to sound to hostile around our new guest. I took the salt out of Gracie's out stretched hand.
"No, it's fine. If I'm being honest, this all seems a little out of the normal," Brayden told them, then turned to me, "I have to be in the mood for it," he said. "Why, you don't like it?" He put a fry in his mouth, watching me mix up my chicken.
