We were getting closer and closer to the top. I felt a spark of joy as I spotted the chairlifts going across the mountain; it looked like a kind of station was at the other end of the line, and I suspected THAT was where we could catch a bus down from the mountain. However, the ride on the rickety chairlifts looked long, and cold...not to mention, I was scared of heights. Austin started racing toward the platform where we could get onto the chairlift, but I stopped him.

"Wait, Austin. Wait." I grabbed him by the arm and he stopped dead in his tracks.

"What? Come on, let's go! We're so close to getting back!" He tugged on my arm and gestured toward the platform. My cheeks warmed. I was ashamed of my fear- it was embarrassing.

"I...I'm scared of heights..." I awkwardly admitted my pathetic fear. Austin instantly looked annoyed.

"Oh come on, don't be such a baby!" he snapped. All that kindness he'd shown me before seemed to be gone; it gave me a fright and I got a bit startled at his sudden change of behavior.

"We are so close to getting back and you are stopping me because of your PATHETIC little needs?" He started raising his voice at me and I awkwardly stared down at my feet. This was the Austin I knew. This was how he normally acted. Every time he snapped at me, I winced once again. I tried to stop it, but soon I felt tears forming in my eyes.

"You know what? No. I am not letting you stop me from getting out of here." He started walking toward the platform, but then...he stopped. He sighed heavily and turned back around slowly.

"My mind isn't going it let me leave you here, is it." He looked at me solemnly. I slowly looked up at him and shook my head. He sighed and walked back down to me.

"Look...I don't care what it takes, but we both have to get out of here. I'll even hold your hand if you want." He forced a smile at me. I let out a little chuckle, but that only made the tears stream out more. I wiped them away and took his hand.

"O-Okay, thanks..." I stuttered, embarrassed.

"What a little baby..." he muttered. I pretended not to hear. Just as we were about to step on, some people appeared behind us. They were wearing uniforms, and they looked important.

"Hey! You can't get on there! Hey! HEY!" They were shouting at us as we were backing up, getting closer to the edge of the platform.

"Ah shit. No, wait- we have to get home-" Austin tried to protest, but they kept getting closer, about to grab us. He turned to me frantically with a panicked expression on his face.

"JUMP!" he yelled.

Before I could react, he leapt off the platform, bringing me along with him. A rush of adrenaline coursed through my veins as we fell through the air. Just as I thought we were going to fall and hit the ground, we stopped falling and I felt a jolt of pain shoot through my body. I looked up; Austin had managed to grab onto the side of one of the chairlifts. The jolt was from the tugging coming from Austin, because he was still holding my hand and I was dangling in the air from his arm. Using all his strength, he pulled me up with one arm whilst holding onto the chairlift with the other. I gripped onto the chairlift too as the people at the platform watched in astonishment.
