Falling

Austin swung back to face the people standing on the platform, who were in utter shock.

"HAHA, SUCKERS!" he yelled and gave them the middle finger. "HAHAHA! WE DID IT HENRY! WE'RE GETTING OUT OF HERE!" He nudged me, both of us still dangling off the edge of the moving chairlift, but I wasn't laughing. I was absolutely terrified. Austin saw my fear and rested his free arm on my shoulder.

"Hey- it's gonna be okay- look, we're going through some forest up ahead, and the ride looks less than a mile. We're gonna be fine." His words were enough to calm me down, but I was still very wary. We were getting higher and higher, my hands were getting sore from holding on so tight, and my entire body was quivering.

"Do you think you can try to get up onto the chair?" I asked him.

"Ugh, no, I tried that it's too slippery," he replied whilst trying to climb up. I tried too, but I kept slipping, like him. So, we just hung there, switching from one arm to the other to minimize the discomfort. It never got less scary, I just knew it would be over soon and that's what kept me going. Soon enough, we were slowly traveling above some forest. What scared me the most was that in this section of our journey, below us was no longer puffy snow; it was a hard slate floor, and falling would be fatal. However, I tried to not think about it too much. Soon, I started to see abandoned train tracks in the distance; eventually, we were traveling directly over them. All was well, when suddenly, violent gusts of wind whipped around us, tearing at the chairlifts. It was getting harder to hold on by the second, and I felt the chair rocking from side to side. I felt my hand slipping. I looked to my right; Austin was slipping too.

"AUSTIN-!" I screamed in desperation.

"JUST HOLD ON, JUST HOLD ON!" he repeated. I was trying my best to hold on, when the chairlift violently swung forward.

And I fell.

Falling, falling, falling.

And I got that horrible sinking feeling you get when you realize in that split second before you hit the ground that you can't stop it, and that you're not going to be okay this time.

I closed my eyes and braced for impact.

My body slammed into the ground, and I hit my head on the train tracks. Austin landed beside me with a thud. An overwhelming amount of pain surged through my body and I winced in pain, but soon, I couldn't really feel it anymore. I was quite dazed from hitting my head and everything was a bit hazy. We both lay there on the train tracks, staring at the sky, in shock. I knew my leg was broken, and I could feel blood seeping into my clothes. I looked down at my chest, oozing blood pouring out.

"Well Austin, I don't think we're gonna get out of this one..." I managed to say, my speech slow and slurred. The world at that moment seemed peaceful and still, and I lay there, wondering if Austin was dead or not, listening to the wind and watching the trees sway. I suddenly heard Austin sobbing beside me. I slowly and painfully turned to face him. He was clutching his left arm, it being clearly broken. I watched, unable to provide him any comfort or any sort of response. He turned to me with tears in his eyes. He took a deep breath, and pulled me closer for a hug.

"I'm r-really sorry for all...that I did to y..." he stuttered, his tears soaking into my sweater.

"I'm sorry too. I'm so sorry...I regret my actions..." I was surprised that he was apologizing to me; he didn't seem like that kind of person at all. But, now that we were going to die, it made sense that he'd want to die with everything fixed up, and without us fighting.

"I don't want to d-die without making things right with you," he said.

"I don't want to die," I added, but prayer couldn't save me now. It couldn't save Austin either; I could see he was in a lot of pain as well. We both lay there, sobbing, awaiting our fate.

Suddenly everything got quieter. I could hear Austin's muffled screams...

"HENRY, HENRY STAY WITH ME." He was shaking me violently, but my eyes started getting very tired...

"Goodbye, Austin..." I muttered. My eyes slowly closed, and everything faded to black...

And I lay there, limp and lifeless, Austin sobbing over my dead body, soon to suffer the same fate as me.
