THE RIDE: CHAPTER TWO
SEPTEMBER 3RD, 2003.Sydney beat the morning light to work, leaving in the dark morning hours. She had all of the information she needed to form a good proposal to the Chief as to why she needed to be on the Santiago case. And she had no time to waste, as the man was set to appoint assignments for the unit today.
Once the elevator hit the seventh floor, the woman got to work. She first headed back towards Dana's office to return the Santiago case folder. After that, she headed back to her office and finished up small miscellaneous tasks before putting her head into the details of the Santiago case.
"Pierce...you're in awfully early." The woman nearly choked as she was shaken by the presence of her boss, who was standing at the open door entrance.
"I figured the extra hours wouldn't hurt." Sydney replied, slowing down her work process. The salt and peppered man mirrored a smile, looking at the amounts of work that was loaded onto her desk.
"It's good to have you back on the scene."
"It feels good to be back." the woman voiced, her mind reverting back to the time when she wasn't. Despite it, she loved her job— even when it pushed her passed her limits.
"...I know you endured a lot with that previous case, and even with your time off. If all of this becomes too much again, you know that I am more than willing to give you more time off to he—
"Chief. I...I got this. I'm good." Sydney assured, "And since we're talking about work, I wanted to talk about the most recent case that's running now. The Santiago one..."
"...I want to be apart of it." the woman announced with much confidence. She glimpsed at the man's face, as it was spewed with indecisiveness.
All that Chief could think about was how the last case turned out for Sydney, and how it resulted in her losing her longtime partner-in-crime and mentor.
The toll it took on her emotionally was too much of a factor that the Chief had to consider, along with being well aware of how tough this Santiago case was going to be.
"Sydney...I would love to have you on the case. But I...I just don't think the timing is right. You're just now getting back on your feet and into the groove of things."
"I've given you nothing but exceptional work since being in this unit Chief. I don't think one minor setback should set me back this far, to where I can't even be apart of one, if not, the biggest case that this firm has been involved in."
