Molecules of pinene and limonene.
Sweltering heat of the sun,
and these molecules are a force to be reckoned with,
reminding people of summer and dusky evenings.
Stridulation helps the crickets sing,
while the birds chirp and flap their wings.
Surface waves driven by the wind,
help the lake touch the shore with a gentle caress.
And the mountains kiss the stars,
while bathing in the light of the moon.
There is language in the connections,
between the living and non-living.
Like when the moon pulls the tide,
and the sun fills the plants with life.
Or when the wind scatters the decaying leaves,
through the autumn sky,
giving nutrients to the pumpkins and apples.
Perhaps it is the snow melting in the spring,
watering the plants and feeding the rivers.
The world breathes to let us live.
We are familiar with the geography,
but far away from understanding its true nature.
We don't understand the plants,
or the difference between igneous and sedimentary rocks.
How the flavour of raspberries come from a mere flower,
or how the cycle of decomposition nurtures life.
A textbook only provides so much information.
It's not a supple experience,
or an invigorating story told from the tongues of experience.
It is cookie-cutter,
constructed under the bias of capitalism.
Knowledge is the foundation of capitalism.
We know how to exploit and destroy,
when we should know how to nurture and create.
Knowledge should be the foundation of harmony.
Imagine a world without...
Salty ocean air.
Campfire smoke amongst the mighty pines.
Feeling the mud between your toes,
or the kiss of snowflakes on your flushed cheeks.
The gritty taste of carrots from grandma's garden.
Strawberries in a haze of honeysuckle and the buzz of bees.
Oxygen.
Water.
Clean air.
It doesn't take much to recognize the cries of nature.
All you have to do is look.
Listen.
Learn.
Feel.
Learn the language and feel the heartbeat of nature.
