European sickness 

As a child when the europeans first came to the to The New World they brought with them new diseases. as representations of the land Matthew and Alfred both got sick to. Some of the diseases included smallpox, measles, whooping cough, chicken pox, bubonic plague, typhus, and malaria. Most of the time when Alfred was sick, he was unaccompanied. Either because you're not at England yet or because England was away. Either way he was still a child when he got the sicknesses. Because of that, they were more intense than in an adult. Even when England was really there, he was bad at medicine and caring for a sick child. because of how often Alfred got sick. It cause permanent damage in his eyes, causing him to need glasses.
