Chapter One

A/N: In the chapters of the book, the weather is that in the morning, it's cold, and in the afternoon, it's hot, then it goes back to cold in the evening.

Sapphire jolted awake in her bed, rubbing her eyes. The scent of food drifted up into her room as her eyes adjusted to the brightness of the sunlight.

"Mother?" She called, getting up with a grunt.

Her socks scuffed the rug underneath her bed. Sapphire  reached under her bed for her shoes, slipping them on as she hopped downstairs. The clomp of her shoes echoed across the semi-quiet house, allowing the hedgehog to hear the bubbling of bacon. She reached for it. "I believe you're forgetting someone?" A voice said behind her. Her mother, Julia, was sitting at the table, her metallic fingers tapping against the table. An open book was lying in front of her.

A/N: Julia is a genderbend of Jules the Hedgehog, Sonic's father.

Sapphire smiled sheepishly, her hand drifting away from the bacon. "Psyche!" Sapphire's hand shot towards the bacon. She grabbed it, but dropped it as a knock on the door startled her. Sapphire picked up the bacon and ran to the door, opening it. "Hey, yes it's me!"

A bright orange fox with two tails was standing in the entrance, her two tails drifting. "Hey, Sapphire!" The fox exclaimed.

"Hi, Tails." said Sapphire. "Wait here!" She dashed upstairs, grabbing her backpack and water bottle. She sped down to the entrance. Julia put down her book. "Hey, Sapphire?"

Sapphire paused, looking at her mother. "Yes?"

"Make sure to not show anyone your super speed. We don't want anyone to take you away."

Sapphire rolled her eyes. "Yes, Mother." She ran out the door, Tails following her.

"Race you to the bus stop!"

 "No fair! You're too fast!"

"I beat you!"

Sapphire slowed to stop next to a bus stop (insert cartoonish skidding sound here). A black hedgehog with red stripes was standing there, looking down at the pavement.

"Faker," the ebony-black hedgehog said, not taking her eyes off of the pavement.

"Are you excited for school?" Sapphire asked, moving until she was right next to Tomato's eye.

Tomato moved one ruby eye to look at Sapphire. "Maybe, maybe not."

Sapphire rolled her eyes. "You're no fun." She huffed. Tails walked up, her breath puffing.

"Sapphire, how do you move so fast?"

Sapphire looked at her friend, then said, "I dunno. I guess you could say I'm just really athletic?"

Tails shrugged. "Sure...anyway, how long have you been waiting at the bus stop, Tomato?"

The hedgehog clearly looked startled. "Um...about a half-hour," She closed her eyes again. "And don't talk to me until the bus gets here."

"Okay?" Sapphire said, sounding skeptical.

A faint honk sounded up the road, and the bus roared into view. Out of the corner of her eye, Sapphire saw her friend Adam start running towards the bus. "Hey, wait!" He called. Sapphire hopped on the bus, and she told the bus driver, "There's one more mobian coming."

Adam jumped onto the bus just as the doors closed, and he paid with money. "Thanks, Sapphire."

The blue hedgehog smiled, "You're welcome, Adam."

She dashed to the benches on the other side of the driver's seat, taking the only one left. The bus lurched as it climbed a hill, almost knocking Sapphire out of her seat. She looked around the bus, finding Tails as she stumbled across to Sapphire. Tomato was standing near the back of the bus, hanging onto one of the straps attached to the ceiling.

"Hey, Tomato!" Sapphire called.

Ruby eyes turned to look at emerald. "What?"

"You can have my seat." Sapphire gestured to her seat, getting up. Tomato hobbled over, her face a mask of disbelief.

"Thanks."

"You're welcome."

This one was significantly shorter than the old chapter. Yes, I'm rewriting this book. I'm still keeping the plot, just rephrasing it.

This chapter was 630 words.
