Why am I doing this?

She gazed at the moonlit sea, the smooth black liquid lapping the edge of the coast. She flicked her ears. Someone was coming.

"Eeltail? Is that you?" She asked as the gray tom stepped out from the beach grasses. "Yes, sorry I was late. The kits wouldn't let me go." A pang of jealousy stabbed through her. Her brother had something she could never have, kits. A mate. No, I know my responsibility to the Clan as a medicine cat, I mustn't distract myself. She told herself.

"Ploverwing?" Eeltail was looking at her with concern in his eyes. She shook away her thoughts and looked back at him. "Is there something troubling you?" He asked. "No just nostalgia I guess." She lied. Her brother's eyes brightened up." Remember when we used to play on the beach and dare each other to go out to sea and swim?" He asked. She smiled up at him. "Of course! I remember that like it was yesterday!" She said, suddenly forgetting what she was thinking about. Ploverwing flicked her tail, spraying her brother's snout with sand. He smiled back at her and chuckled. Suddenly, his laughing eyes turned serious. She looked down at her paws.

"I need to know.." He started. "Shh." She silenced him. "I'm not supposed to be telling you any of this." She said nervously. "I know but..please..I need to keep them safe..I can't loose anyone else.." He begged. "If Poolstar knew what I told you, I would get in so much trouble! She would think I was a seagull taking advantage of my gift to commute with StarClan." Ploverwing said. She was tired of explaining this over and over to her brother. "Aww come on! Poolstar acts like a moony eyed octopus around you! You're more to her than just her medicine cat."

She sighed. She couldn't stop thinking of how the leader always walked into her den, asking if she was ok and needed help. She couldn't stop showing the affection for her and, to be honest, neither could she.

Do I love her? Guilt stabbed her heart. She closed her eyes for a second and tried to set her feelings aside. I am a medicine cat and she is the leader. There is no future for us.

"No brother, I've seen no signs or visions. I'm sorry." She said. "Well." Disappointment was in her brother's eyes. "I've got to go." She quietly looked at him as he went back to camp, his long gray tail disappearing in the bushes. She sat there for a while, listening to the ocean then started heading back to camp.

"Psst, Ploverwing." She looked behind her, surprised to see the Poolstar. The mottled she-cat's fur glowed in the moonlight. Ploverwing's heart started to beat faster. She suddenly felt all warm and tingly inside. Is this what falling in love feels like? She wondered. Poolstar signaled with her tail to follow her. She chased after Poolstar suddenly just realizing where she was taking her, the dunes.

The arrived at the dunes, the herb scent filled her nose, this was where she got some of her herbs to heal the clan. Poolstar sat down and so did Ploverwing. "Ploverwing, I love you. I really do!" Ploverwing stared at her, her eyes full of love. "Oh Poolstar! So do I!" She confessed. Ploverwing sighed. "Too bad I'm a medicine cat. We could be together if it weren't for that." She said. Poolstar twined her tail with hers. "I know you can't take mates..But maybe this could be our own secret thing? Not mates, just friends who love each other." She must love me a lot if she's taking this risk. She thought.

"Ok, but nobody can know." Ploverwing concluded. They touched noses. "Deal."
