...

At six in the morning, United States Secret Service Agent Megan Pete boarded a small jet bound for New York City, her ID badge clipped to the pocket of her dark blue gabardine suit.

In her hands, she carried an overnight bag with a change of clothes, her computer, and her cellphone, of course. The rest of her belongings would follow on a separate flight, and would be delivered to her new apartment in the Gramercy Park Hotel later on that day. After four hours of deep sleep, undisturbed by dreams, Megan felt refreshed and ready to work. The fact that she didn't like her assignment was a moot point now. She had a job to do, and that was all that mattered.

The flight was only partially full. It was an early Saturday morning, so only a few government employees were traveling. Megan took a seat across the aisle from a burly blonde man with a badge that read FBI in bold letters. She saw him study her own badge as she sat down. Female agents were no longer rare, but she still drew attention. Being tall and certainly above average in the looks department, she was used to it.

"Investigative division?" he questioned as the plane taxied down the runway.

Megan nearly said 'yes', then stopped herself quickly. With a shake of her head, she replied, "Protective."

"Anybody important?" the man asked curiously.

"Aren't they all?"

He couldn't tell if she was joking, so he stifled a laugh. And they said FBI agents were humorless.

Megan then opened her laptop, subtly angling the screen away from the man beside her. He took the hint and opened a newspaper as she entered her password.

She accessed the USSS personnel division link and pulled up the biographies of her new team members. Everything appeared typical: four men and four women, apart from herself, all possessing over five years of experience in the field. They all had college degrees, as was customary for most agents, except for a few exceptions who entered through military channels or alternative paths. Additionally, each individual had advanced emergency medical training, just like Megan. And, most importantly, they were all skilled marksmen.

Concerning their personal lives, two men and one woman were married. She also noticed that a few of them were black, which she was relieved about. Megan fixed a name to each face, then closed the website.

Entering the protected password, Megan brought up the encrypted file she had downloaded last night.
