"Missy Sanders was killed this morning." My mother announces as I walk downstairs still half asleep.
Well, that wakes me right up.
That's the second person in this town to be killed this month.
"How?" I ask her curiously.
"Elena! It would help if you didn't ask such things, it's rude" My mother tells me setting down the paper and walking over to the kitchen.
I see no point in beating around the bush, a person is dead. Rudeness is the last thing on my mind.
I walk over to the paper and pick it up scanning the article, Cause of death is a shot to the back of the head execution style.
The same way Martin Peters was killed.
My stomach churns and I push the paper away from me worried I won't be able to eat my breakfast, which would annoy my mother further.
I go upstairs to my room and look out the window, someone in our town is a killer I don't understand how people can continue to live normally knowing that.
I loud laugh cuts through my thoughts and I lean further out the window to see Xavier and his friends walking to school, I scrunch my nose up and grab my school bag and run outside.
I walk to the end of my road and wait for Abigail like I've done every day for the past two years, except today I feel different.
I suppose murder does that to a person.
I can see Xavier and his friends at the end of the road and I watch the four of them.
Xavier is the priest's son, so naturally you'd think he's this sweet, innocent boy but he's as far as you could get from that.
He drinks, he smokes, and he sleeps around. He's trouble.
I understand his charm, he's dangerous, he's unpredictable. Nothing like the boring town I've grown up in. And I'm not dumb enough to pretend he isn't attractive. He has messy raven hair with amber eyes and, I've heard, if you get close enough he has dimples.
I want nothing to do with him because I'm a teenage girl and he's an attractive teenage boy and we all know how the story ends.
Abigal walks over to me, "Did you hear about Missy?"
I nod as we start walking to school, I'm pretty sure the whole town knows by now. I can't believe they haven't caught the killer, There are literally only 3000 living here."
Abigail shakes her head, and as she does her blonde hair spills over her shoulders. "People are scared and when people are scared they other do nothing or do everything. It's clear which one the police are."
I frown not satisfied, those people deserve justice and with no consequences for the killer what's to stop them from acting again? And what if this time it's someone I love?
The rest of the school day crawls by slowly with everyone talking about Missy, she was the art teacher, and the school assembly they hold for us is painful.
"At the end of the assembly, we encourage everyone to collect a whistle to blow if you're in danger."
I try not to make a face at the principal and instead turn to Abigail, "What is a whistle meant to do? Don't people already have rape alarms those are way more likely to actually do something?"
"That's because the school doesn't give a shit about us." Someone whispers into my ear making me jump, I turn around and see Xavier sitting behind me grinning.
