Breakthroughs and breakdowns

"I have done this three times now. Why are you scared?" Xavier whispers as he stares up at me from the ground.

I'm leaning out the window trying to force myself to climb out, I normally sneak out the front door but my mom is having a late night so my only option is to throw myself out the window just like Xavier did.

"What if I trip?" I call out, staring at how high up I am.

If I fell now I would definitely break a couple of my bones.

"I'm here, Elena, I would catch you," Xavier tells me, raising his arms as if to prove his point.

Something twitches in my chest, it must be nerves.

Holding my breath, I climb out the window and grab onto the vines and ivy cascading down the side of my house. Slowly I begin to lower myself down as quietly as possible, Xavier's hand slides around my waist when I'm a couple of feet off the ground and he pulls me down onto the floor.

"See, you survived." He tells me as I let out a deep breath.

We both walk towards the woods in comfortable silence and when we arrive we both pull out flashlights and start looking around.

The yellow tape blows eerily in the wind, I hate how quiet it is.

Xavier is looking at the spot where Mark was killed, there's some dried blood mixed with the blood and a white outline of the position he was found in had been drawn in chalk.

I leave him to poke about while I scan the area, I mean why here? I get it the woods are scary but whoever this killer is has to be pretty confident in their abilities to continue leaving the victims in the same area.

Yes originally the woods are the perfect dumping ground for bodies but not anymore. The police are probably crawling over this place so clearly the woods hold some significance to the killer.

Maybe they love nature?

No, they have to be comfortable here, the killer must be someone who's lived here a long time and had years to grow used to these woods.

But if they've always lived in this town then why are they only now starting to kill people? Something must have happened recently in their lives to make them start needing to kill people.

I have so many questions and such few answers it's very discouraging. The next step should be trying to find a link between all these victims and perhaps it can lead us to a clue about the killer.

Something red catches my eye and when I look closer I wrinkle my nose to discover an empty Durex packet. Ew.

I'm about to turn my gaze when I look back at the packet and the condom that lies a few feet away. It looks new like it's just been used.

"Hey, Xavier do people come to these woods to hook up a lot?" I whisper, eyes fixed on the wrapper.

"Uh yeah, everyone knows the woods are a great hookup spot...why?"

I wave my hand and he walks over to me, his eyes follow my gaze and he notices the condom.

"Shit...that was used today...so close to the body..."

Our eyes widen as we turn to each other, "Mark was with someone, could it have been the killer?"

"Oh, he was with someone alright, killer or not whoever Mark was hooking up with here was probably the last person to see him alive," Xavier mutters, glancing around.

I frown as I turn to look at him, or well his collar bone, I can't actually look at Xavier unless he looks down at me. He's too tall.

"Does Mark have a girlfriend?"
