(Emily, I'm Sorry)
ACT ONE—CHAPTER THIRTEEN

2021

Emily avoided going to her parent's house as much as possible. Especially since the divorce, between her and Aidan splitting up and Ash's most recent arrest everything with her family was in shambles.

Emily's mother tended to be someone who wanted to fix everything. This unfortunately did not work and Emily's favor.

"So sweetheart, I found you the perfect man."

This was exactly the type of conversation that Emily preferred to avoid, her mother just never seemed to get the message.

Emily scoffed, running a hand through her hair, "Mom, why can't you just leave my love life be?"

"Sweetheart just because of the stuff with Aidan, bless his little heart, doesn't mean that you have to be afraid of love. And this man I found for you makes enough money to support you and your little business."

"Not sure why we paid for a medical degree that you don't use." Emily's father added on, with a frown.

Emily had worked her ass off for that degree, it wasn't like she was entirely throwing it away, at least that hadn't been the plan originally.

It was just after her brief stay in the psych ward that Emily decided to take a step back from practicing medicine, and ever since she had been doing so much better. All of the surgeries and high-stress environments proved to be too much for her while she was also trying to balance raising a kid.

"Why is everyone harping on my life choices? At least I'm not in jail." Emily defended, completely throwing her sister under the bus.

"And my business is doing perfectly well for your information, I'm supporting myself and my daughter. You should be proud."

Emily's parents didn't say anything at all, not to defend themselves...not to apologize. Nothing.

"Also, Mom. You can stop trying to set me up with men, I'm done being afraid of your judgments, it's about time that I grow the hell up, and be myself for once. I'm gay."

Emily's parents stared at her totally speechless, "That's right! I said it. I like women."

Daisy looked between her grandparents and her mom, "Does anyone want any cake? I'm gonna go get the cake."

"What on Earth are you going on about, Emily?" her mother questioned, and Emily pressed her lips together, "I was never in love with Aidan. In fact, the only person I was ever in love with was Natalie."

"Natalie?" Emily's dad spoke up, "like the girl from your soccer team?"

Emily nodded, "That's the one."

The brunette knew her parents would never approve of any of this, "Do you need help Emily? You can still let us help you."

Emily had enough of this conversation, she knew they would never approve.

"Daisy, let's go. We're leaving."

"Emily, please just wait—" her mom tried and she shook her head.

"We both know that you'll never approve of my love life. So I'm just going to go."

Daisy walked into the room a slice of cake on a paper plate, "Already?"

"Yes, Daisy. Already."

Daisy didn't argue, grabbing her bag, "Bye grandma, bye grandpa."

Several hours later, Emily and Daisy were in the car when her phone rang out, "Hello?"

"Hey Em! Do you wanna come spy on Natalie's date with me?"

"Misty what the fuck?" Emily deadpanned, she couldn't believe this— well it was Misty she was talking to. So maybe she could.

Emily did have to wonder her logic, why would she want to see her ex on a date?

"Well, I was just offering." Misty defended, it was almost scary how genuine her words were.

"Look, no matter how intriguing that sounds...I have plans." Emily explained.

"Oo Birthday date?" Misty asked, and Emily scoffed.

"No birthday date. Just a promise to a friend." Emily denied, "Okay, I gotta go." she added quickly before ending the call.

"Who the fuck was that?" Daisy shot her mother a questioning glance,

"That is a story for another day." Emily answered vaguely, "Besides, we're here. Ready to enter the realm of rich powerful assholes?"

Daisy sighed, "Do we have to?"

"I promised Tai, I'd be there. I'm her emotional support, for this shit."

"Dr. Clark, I am so glad you could make it. It is quite the honor to meet you."

Emily forced a smile, "It's actually Jensen now." She corrected.

"My apologies," he nodded, "And this must be your wonderful daughter."

"Nice to meet you, Sir." Daisy offered a small forced smile.

"It was a shame to hear that you decided to enter such an early retirement. People claim you were one of the best." He continued, redirecting his attention to Emily.

"I wouldn't call it a retirement, just a step back." Emily said, and he nodded.

"Some just aren't quite strong enough for the medical field."

The blonde probably would have lunged at him, or at least slapped him if  no one had stepped in.

"Emily," Taissa smiled, gently guiding her away from the man, "Good, I found you."

Once they were out of ear shot Emily spoke up, "If that man is found dead in a ditch somewhere, I was probably involved somehow." Emily spoke, only half joking.

"Thank you for being here, Em. I seriously would never make it." Taissa stated.

"Hi Aunt, Tai," Daisy smiled catching up with the two.

"Hi Daisy, how have you been?" The woman asked, her question completely genuine.

Daisy shrugged, "I'm alright I guess."

"That's code for she got suspended for punching her best friend." Emily interrupted, "Where'd you run off to a second ago?"

"To find food." Daisy stated, "It turns out that it's all pretty gross."

"I could have told you that much." Taissa joked, "Now what's this about you punching Callie?"

Daisy crossed her arms, a small pout forming on her lips, "I really don't want to talk about it."

Daisy managed to work her way out of the conversation, and somehow talk Emily into letting her take the keys to get the two of them real food.

So now Emily had fallen back into this old habit and smoked alongside her best friend.

Emily breathed in deeply, letting the form of poison fill her lungs, "Natalie kissed me."

"Wait— Natalie? You've seen Natalie recently? And she kissed you?"

Taissa had sworn she had just talked to Natalie the other day— the woman had been arrested.

Emily sighed, "I'm such a fucking idiot, Tai."

Taissa frowned, "You and I both know that's not true, Em."

"Then why—" she breathed in more of the smoke, "then why do I keep falling for her bullshit?"

"Did you consider that you might just still love her?" Taissa asked gently.

Emily scoffed, "I don't want to— I really don't. I wanna be happy."

Taissa reached over, giving her friend's hand a gentle squeeze, "You're going to get through this, Emily. You always do."
