(Emily I'm Sorry)
ACT ONE - CHAPTER TWENTY-EIGHT1996
Emily felt emotionally and physically drained as she leaned her head against Natalie's shoulder. The blonde was just so tired of it all.
After her conversation with Laura Lee she immediately sought out the comfort of her girlfriend.
It was easy with Natalie, she didn't push Emily to open up about things when she wasn't ready too. She could just simply be.
"Oh my god! What happened? Where are Van and Tai?"
The exclamation caught Emily's attention, so she looked up her eyes falling on Misty Quiggly. She exhaled sharply unsure what to make of the situation, something bad had clearly happened.
Misty's breathing remained erratic as she reached Shauna, Natalie, and Emily.
"She said to leave them— we had to get help," Misty panted. Laura Lee's footsteps padded behind the group of them and she knelt down, hands reaching Misty's shoulders, "Show us which way to go."
Emily stuck close by Natalie's side as they searched the darkened woods.
"Tai! Van!" Shouted the girls.
"Tai!" Emily called out, her voice quickly becoming rough.
Natalie's hand reached for Emily's, trying to comfort her in any way possible. The bleached blonde knew that Emily was scared, she was too.
"Are you sure you came this way?"
Misty shook her head, "I don't know— I can't see anything it's so dark."
A loud crackle sounded from the woods, and a flare lite the sky, "It's them." Laura Lee breathed.
The teenagers scrambled to the area where the flare had been shot from, making sure not to let any time pass by.
Emily's knees collided with the dirt as she reached Taissa's side, "You're ok. You're going to be just fine."
The blonde's voice came out as a raspy whisper, unsure if she was trying to comfort her friend or herself.
A couple of the girls helped support Van as they hastily made their way back to the cabin. Emily however, did her best to comfort Taissa.
"Van's strong," Emily promised, supporting Taissa's weight as the other teenager was entirely out of it.
"Yeah," Natalie added, "One of the strongest."
Natalie did have merit to say that, as she and Van had known each other long before the high school soccer team.
Beams of sunlight poured into the cabin through the windows and door. Emily was snuggled up too close to Natalie to brush it off as just friends, so when she heard Laura Lee's voice clearly addressing the entire group she flinched.
Pulling away from her girlfriend slightly.
"I have an announcement to make."
When no one moved she slammed around a spoon, causing many of the other girls to flinch.
"Thank you," Laura Lee sighed, setting down the spoon and returning to her spot, "In light of the expedition ending, as it did, I have decided that I am going to take the dead guy's plane and fly South. I'm going to find us help and I'm going to get us out of here."
"You're gonna fly?" Lottie asked, her eyebrows pulled together in thought.
"But," Natalie started, "You don't know how."
"This is crazy Laura Lee," Ash sighed, sitting up next to Lottie.
"I've been studying the flight manual for weeks," she explained, "and I checked the gas tank, it's full! I used to watch my grandpa fly he even let me steer a few times. I know that I can do this."
Emily shook her head, pinching the bridge of her nose, she just knew this wasn't going to end well.
"You can't deny that Van needs serious medical attention," Laura Lee motioned to their teammate.
"She's not the only one," Jackie pipped up, she turned her head away from Laura Lee and to the other side of the room, "Shauna, tell them."
"I—I really don't—" Shauna stuttered, but Jackie cut her off.
"Tell them."
Emily frowned, she would have been pissed if Jackie had put her on the spot like that, no matter what it was.
"What is it?"
"Yeah tell us, what?"
Taissa's eyes moved between Shauna and Jackie, her eyes settling on Shauna almost as if to say it was ok not to say anything.
Shauna paused her eyes dropping to the floor, "I—I'm pregnant."
"You were having sex?"
Misty rushed to her feet, "How far along are you?"
"Wait, did you get knocked up here?" Mari questioned.
Shauna quickly shook her head, "No I—"
"It doesn't matter when it happened, ok? It just matters that we get them both help." Jackie stated.
"By flying a god knows how old plane?" Emily pipped up, "To me that just sounds like we're signing off a death certificate."
Ash shook her head, "It's crazy, but it might be the best shot we have, Em."
"Ok, Can everyone just—ok," Ben spoke up, "Laura Lee, you can't do this! No, it's not even close to safe."
"There is no safe anymore Coach Scott." Laura Lee stated, "It's going to be winter soon. If I don't do this we're—we're all going to fucking starve."
Emily nodded, it was true they were barely finding food, now.
"Alright well, I'm still the only adult here," he pointed out, "So, no. I'm not going to let you do it."
Emily swallowed, sharing a look with Natalie, "This is crazy," she whispered.
Natalie nodded, discreetly wrapping her hand around Emily's hand. The tension in the room was quite high.
Shauna was obviously upset that Jackie had put her on the spot. Rightfully so, too.
Ben was attempting to use the fact that he was an adult to reason with a bunch of teenagers.
Laura Lee was determined to save them all, just like God wanted her too.
"What are you going to do to stop me, Coach?"
