NOVEMBER 20TH, 1995
𝐎𝐌𝐍𝐈𝐒𝐂𝐄𝐍𝐓Devyn is sitting in her old room--alone and studying. The time has come for it to be Thanksgiving break. For Devyn, it doesn't feel like a break since they only gave the students a week off, and they have finals the following week.
She chose to spend her week in her childhood home, a gated mansion nestled deep in the suburbs. Devyn admits to missing her family and the lavish lifestyle that came with it. Until recently, she was confined to her dormitory and had forgotten the luxuries she once had access to. But now, she's cramming any information for the big test. Her mind tends to slip, and thoughts about Malik begin to pour in. They've been talking since that day, and she finds herself wanting more of him.
"Devyn, honey, are you okay?" her mom bursts into her room. Devyn whips her head up and shakes her head. Her mom notices the book on her bed and softly scolds her, "It's called a break for a reason, girl."
Devyn smiles at her mother's concern and closes her book. "I know, Mom," she admits with a grin.
"Roberta made her delicious apple pie. Do you want her to bring it up to you?"
She thinks about the offer. Roberta, the family's chef, is always known for her mouth-watering pie. Devyn loved it when she was younger. "Yeah, that'll be nice for her to do," Devyn says.
Her mom's facial expressions change, her face filled with sadness. "Have you talked to Layla yet? I've tried, and she..." her mother begins to speak, "She hates your father so much, and I can't understand why."
The mention of Layla and her dad makes her roll her eyes. Layla and Devyn's dad have consistently been at each other's throats since they were teenagers. Devyn and their mother have to be in the middle, trying to break it up before it. If Layla and Josiah are still at it, she isn't looking forward to Thanksgiving. "It's probably his line of work and all the things he's said on live television," Devyn responds with a shrug. Her mom lets out a melancholy sigh before leaving her room and closing the door behind her.
Malik crosses Devyn's mind once again, and she smiles and bites down on her lip. She glances at her phone on her bed and swiftly grabs it, dialing Malik's number. It rings for a minute, but it finally picks up. "Hello?" Malik answers.
"Hey, what's up?" Devyn says.
"I'm out and about right now. You tryna come see me tonight?" Malik arrogant says.
"Maybe..." Devyn trails off, kicking her feet on her bed.
"Where you at?"
"Meet me at the bus stop on 112th in two hours," Devyn says before hanging up. A bit of guilt stirs in her. She practically ghosted Omar and ditched him for Malik. Omar wasn't a good fit for Devyn; she was only going with him to make her father happy. And she still hasn't told Malik about her father or where she came from. She shrugs it off and hops off her bed. Suddenly, a knock startles Devyn.
