Oakland CaliforniaMalik and I have been dating for almost a month and it's been bliss. My father hasn't spoken to me since Thanksgiving. He told me that he was disappointed with me, but I didn't care. I'm not about to give up my happiness for him anymore. Malik and I are together and that's it.
Today is Vanessa's birthday and she turns five. Malik promised that we would meet today after she spent the day with her mom. He was honest and told me he doesn't want me, and Vanessa's mom meeting just yet. I respect it. And besides, I didn't feel like meeting her anyway.
Today is Friday, so I have my dance class. This time, I didn't have to rely on anyone to pick me up because I have my own car. After my class, I walk to my car and hop in. My phone rings in my gym bag that's on my passenger seat. I take out my phone to answer it, "Hello?"
"Hey baby," Malik speaks on the other line. I smile immediately as I hear his voice. "You coming over right?"
"Duh," I reply, "I got Vanessa's gift wrapped and everything."
"Gift? That girl got enough damn gifts, especially with Christmas around the corner."
"So? When I was younger, I—" I begin to say but stop myself. When I was younger, I had all the toys in the world. I clear my throat and quickly say, "I barely had any. She deserves the best of the best."
Malik chuckles and says, "I guess so. I'll talk to you later okay?"
I say my goodbyes before hanging up the phone. I breathe in and out, thinking about me almost slipping. Lying to Malik doesn't feel right at all and I feel like I'm too deep to confess. Somehow I'm going to have to tell him, but it won't be today.
I put the ignition in the car and pull off. This will be my first time seeing Malik's house. I always imagine him living in a small home with just him and Vanessa. Then it would turn into me being in that home, attempting to cook for them both, cleaning, and taking care of Vanessa like she's my own. That's the dream lately. Maybe someday along the line, that'll be us.
Pulling up to the home, I notice the house exceeded my expectations. The house stands in a well-kept neighborhood. You can tell there's no type of riff-raff rolling through here. And his house was beautifully built. Black brick walls, neatly cut grass, and even a clean concrete path leading to the front door. I park on the street since there are two cars in the driveway. Someone else must be here.
Getting out of the car, I go in the trunk to pull out the big wrapped box. I struggle a little but manage my way to the front door. I knock twice then stand there in the breezy weather. A few seconds later, the door swings open, revealing Stephen, the guy I met at the Halloween party.
