"In your dreams, Nathan. Go away."
I felt a trickle of fear as I started speed walking. I was on a deserted road, the houses quiet and forlorn. Should I just randomly knock on a door for help? Was Nathan going to try something?
As expected, Nathan drove the car at the pace I was walking in, leaning over the passenger seat. "I thought we could help each other."
I ignored him and kept walking.
"Come on, Aria," Nathan cajoled. "It's about Yasmeen."
Of course, it was. I continued walking but my ears perked up. I cursed my curious self. It was going to be the death of me.
"I thought Yasmeen was your friend," Nathan called out. "Aren't you going to help out a friend?"
"Yasmeen is my friend, not you," I fired back. "Go away, Nathan." I sped up. I was practically jogging by now. And I was not fit enough to keep up the pace. Already my lungs were seizing up. After this is over, I needed to think seriously about working out my lazy butt.
"Not gonna happen," Nathan replied. "At this rate I'm gonna find out where you live. Then you'll have to bear with me every day."
I stopped walking. I hadn't thought of that. "I'm going to report you, Nathan. This is harassment."
Nathan hit the brakes. "Okay, then. Truce. Get in the car, hear what I have to say and I'll leave you alone. You don't have to talk to me ever again."
I narrowed my eyes. "Why should I believe you? You're a heartless bully."
He laid a hand on his chest. "You wound me. But you might just have to take a chance. Remember what I told you? That you really don't want me in your sights." He tilted his head casually, as if talking this way was normal for him. "So, what say?"
"Sounds like a threat," I gritted out.
Nathan shook his head. "Doesn't have to be. You can either make it very simple or very complicated."
I really did not want to go anywhere with him. I did not trust him at all but I also couldn't risk him finding out where I live. If Luke got involved, things could get very ugly, very fast.
So against my better judgement, I got in the car.
Nathan grinned as I questioned all my life choices.
"Okay here goes. I really like Yasmeen. Like really, really like her." Nathan had taken me to a tiny snack bar not far from my house. I was thankful for the fact that there were witnesses around in case he tried something.
I stared at him. He was sprawled on his side of the booth like he had no care in the world, one arm on the back of the seat. "Are you kidding me?"
"Not at all." He drummed his inked fingers on the table. "I'm crazy about her and I've told her this multiple times. But she just doesn't want to give me the time of day." He rested his elbows on the table, leaning forward. His bright red hair fell over metallic grey eyes. "What I want to ask you is: What more can I do to get her attention?"
