two

Will opened the front door.
"Oh you're going out with your friends?" he heard Joyce call from the other room.
"I wish. I'm actually going to get a summer job."
"Really? That's great sweetie. Good luck."
"Thanks." Will mumbled as he went out the door.
He got on his bike and pedalled off to the mall of Hawkins. He entered every single shop that was there. The replies he got from each one were all very disappointing.

"Hello I was wondering if I could get a summer job here?"
"Sorry son we don't do this here."

"Are you over 18?"
"No."
"Sorry we don't employ minors."

"Hey it says in the shop window that you offer summer jobs. I was wondering if maybe I could apply."
"We're really sorry but we've already got people for the job sorry."
"Oh. Then why is there a flyer saying so?"
"We forgot to take it off. I'm really sorry. I wish I could help you but there isn't place for every teenager in Hawkins."
"Yes sure. I understand."

And many, many more similar responses. How was it possible that there was no place nowhere for him to get a job. If only he'd tried a week before... He was never going to get his computer back.
He went back to his house.
"I'm home" he said, entering the front door.
He didn't hear a reply but he could guess from the noice that was coming from the living room that Joyce was on the phone to somebody.
He hurried to his room and pounced onto his bed to lie down on his back. He opened his group chat with Lucas and Dustin on his phone.

Will: Guess what guys? Finding a summer job in Hawkins is impossible!!!

Dustin: Where did you ask?

Will: Everywhere! I asked at every single shop at the mall and nowhere was available.

Dustin: Shit

Will: My Mom's gonna be mad but I guess it's not really my fault right?

Dustin: Yeah but if you'd applied last week you might have been able to. Now every where is already employing enough teens for the summer.

Will: 😭

Lucas: Wait does this mean you won't get your laptop back either??

Will: Haha guess not 😭

Lucas: my poor Will... I feel bad for you

Dustin: me too

Will: And I feel bad for myself. This is torture

Will lied down and placed his phone on his chest. What was he going to do now?
He heard a knock at the door.
"Come in."
It was his Mom. Maybe she had changer her mind and was going to give him back his computer!
"Hey sweetie." Joyce said.
She came and sat down next to him on his bed.
"So how did it go?"
"Bad."
"Why? Didn't you get a job?" she asked.
"No. Mom I asked at every single store at the mall! Nowhere at all is offering a job."
"They probably already have employed teens for the summer."
"That's exactly what Dustin said."
Will sighed.
"Now what do I do?"
"Well... I have some good news."
Computer? Computer?? Computer???
"Grandma and Grandpa rang and the restaurant in their town is offering jobs for teenagers. They desperately need help but they haven't got enough employees."
"No. No way."
"Look... I know you and grandpa don't get on like best friends but I'm sure you'll have fun."
"It's not that I don't get on with him Mom. He's mean. That's it, he's just mean. That's why I stopped going every summer."
"You don't have to spend loads of time with him like before. You'll be busy working. Look, honey, I'm sure everything will be okay."
"I don't know..."
"If you want your computer back, you better go and ring up that restaurant and get yourself a job."
"Yeah yeah okay okay... Fine I'll do it. But will I have the computer back before or after summer."
"We'll see what happens. I'm not promising anything. You should be happy I let you keep your phone."
"Jeez thanks." Will said sarcastically.
He looked online to find the phone number for the restaurant and rang it. He put the phone up to his ear and heard a male voice speaking.
"Yes. Hello. My name is Will Byers. I heard that you were looking for people to work at the restaurant... Yes. I'm 17... yeah like a summer job... Really?... Thank you so much. That's really nice of you."
Every though he was disappointed about having to go to his grandparents for the summer, he had to keep his enthusiasm on the phone.
"Oh yes of course. Yes. Thank you so much.... Bye."
"So I figured by that that you got the job?" Joyce stated.
"I did. They said that some of the staff had leaved so they really needed new employees, teenagers or not."
"Okay. Well that's good news. When do you start?"
"Well that's the thing... They want me to start tomorrow."
"Tomorrow? Well go and pack your bags. I'm taking you to your grandparents."
"Can I have my computer back then?"
"No."
"Pfff..." Will puffed and went to his bedroom to gather his things to take for the summer.
Half an hour later, Joyce for Will to come.
"Comin'. I'm just packing some last few things."
If he wasn't getting his computer back any time soon, he needed to keep himself busy somehow. He packed loads and loads of various art supplies. He got to the front door with his two extremely full bags that he then shoved in the boot of the car.
He got in the front seat and connected his headphones straight away. His Mom looked at him with a patronising look.
"Mom come on. I can at least listen to music."
She didn't reply to her son's comment and started driving. It wasn't really far to Will's grandparents – probably a couple of hours. Will hadn't been for such a long while. He sent a message to Lucas and Dustin.

Will: on my way to my grandparents

Dustin: what? why?

Will: it's the only place where I could find a summer job

Lucas: Good luck Will

Will: Thanks, I'm taking all the luck you can possibly give me because I'll probably need it 😭😭🙏

Will listened to his alternative rock playlist for about twenty minutes until, to the sound of Green Day blasting in his ears, he fell asleep
