Emery Rose
10 years later
In the quiet solitude of my bedroom, I stood in front of my ornate vanity mirror, searching for a glimpse of the girl I used to be- The girl who once blended in the background of her peers and shield away from the spotlight- but I couldn't find her anymore.
The reflection was a portrait of popularity, adorned with practiced smiles and a facade that hid the growing distance from the essence of who I truly was.
My room itself felt like it wasn't even mine anymore. My room seemed to belong to Amelia, my sister. Her presence lingered in every corner. Pom-poms adorned the walls, team photos, photos of me holding a trophy and cheerleading posters. Each trophy on the shelf reflected my accomplishments and popularity.
Starting cheerleading in tenth grade wasn't a calculated move to become popular; it was to follow my sister's footsteps- the cheer captain, the heart of the squad. But what I hadn't anticipated was the sudden expectations and attention that came with it.
My life transformed in ways I never expected. All of the sudden I was surrounded by friends, getting invited to parties and having endless conversations with my peers. And It all intensified when I started dating Justin Thompson, the star quarterback of Silvervale High school.
It was like being caught in the middle of a reality show, and I had accidentally become the main character.
As I stared into the mirror, my own reflection stared back at me, a reflection of my mother's features etched into every line and curve of my face. The deep, brown eyes that mirrored her own, the long, straight orange hair that flowed like a waterfall down my shoulders, the pouted lips, and the sprinkling of freckles across my cheeks—all reminders of the woman who had raised me with unwavering love and strength.
In contrast, my older sister Amelia was a mirror image of our father, with her chestnut brown hair cascading in curls around her face and her captivating emerald green eyes that seemed to hold the secrets of the universe. She was a vision of natural beauty, effortlessly captivating everyone she met with her infectious energy and genuine charm.
Amelia had been a legendary cheerleader during her time at the same high school, dancing through life with grace and poise that left an indelible mark on all who crossed her path. Even now, years later, her legacy lingered in the halls of the school, with teachers and students alike still speaking of her with reverence and admiration.
It was clear that my sister had left an enduring impression on the world around her, her presence a beacon of light and joy that had touched the lives of so many.
I clutched the delicate necklace Amelia had given me before she left. A simple pendant, a little golden heart, hung from a fine chain. A promise that no matter the physical distance, the bond between us would remain unbroken.
No matter the distance.
Memories of Amelia flooded my mind. The loss of Amelia not only affected me and my family, but also everyone at Silvervale high school. Everyone that knew her in Gracefield.
Amelia was such a bright person that radiated positivity and optimism who saw the brighter side of everything. She was on the verge of starting college, her excitement palpable, a contagious energy that filled our home with anticipation. But life, in its unpredictable course, snatched her away.
