My life is over.Seven year old Grayson thought as he stomped into his new bedroom that was surrounded by unopened boxes.
As his parents settled downstairs, he was determined not to unpack anything. It doesn't matter how many times his mother tells him to and her vein on her forehead pulsed with anger, he won't do it.
Unpacking those boxes meant accepting the reality that he had to leave behind New York, his family, his old friends, his old school, his old house. Everything!
Although his new house at Gracefield had a pool at the backyard, the rooms were more spacious and the front yard was adorned with beautiful flowers, Grayson didn't want to start a new chapter in this quiet, stupid town.
His parents seemed happy moving to this place, they explained to him that they can "start a new life", but Grayson wasn't thrilled at all. He doesn't wanna start a new life. His life was just fine back in New York with the skyscrapers and the busy streets.
He sits on his bed with furrowed brows and his arm crossed, glaring at the boxes, hoping to be magically transported back to New York.
Suddenly, Grayson's attention was caught by a sound and he glanced outside of his bedroom window.
That's when he saw her.
And his world was forever changed.
Across the narrow gap between their houses, Grayson caught sight of a little girl, about the same age as him, pressing her face against the window of her incredibly pink bedroom.
What the-
Startled, he blinked, his eyebrows shooting up as he tried to make sure he was seeing right and not hallucinating. The girl's face was smooshed against the glass, leaving her cheeks squished, her nose all crooked and her lips deformed.
The little girl was desperately trying to catch his attention since he walked in his room with a scrunched up face, by knocking frantically on her window and pressing her face against the glass, eager to connect with the boy next door.
Confusion mingled on Grayson's face as he rose from his bed and approached his bay window, wanting to take a closer look at the strange girl.
When he finally noticed her, she peeled her face away from the glass and her eyes widened with excitement. Grayson heart skipped a beat.
Oh.
Grayson half expected the girl to look like a human pancake, but her face transformed into a masterpiece come to life, leaving him mesmerized.
Gone was the girl with her face squished. She was now replaced by a pretty girl with bright orange hair that reminded Grayson of sunshine, and big eyes that seemed to be filled with wonder and happiness.
And her smile, oh her smile, beamed with pure joy when he got closer to the window.
He couldn't help but be fascinated by her.
Enchanted.
The girl made Grayson question if he accidentally stumbled into a fairytale.
The girl next door started bouncing up and down as she waved her hand like a maniac.
His sadness started fading away as he slowly waved back at her, a wide grin forming on his lips and a shy blush crept across his face.
His innocent heart started racing and he couldn't quite put into words what he was feeling, but it was like he was drawn to this pretty girl like a magnet.
Grayson's eyes lit up.
In that moment, something clicked. little Grayson knew he needed to have the girl next door in his life...
I need to start unpacking.
