Chapter 3: Fragments of the Past
Evelyn stood outside Alexander's hospital room, her mind consumed by the weight of her decision. She took a deep breath, steeling herself for the task at hand. Opening the door, she entered the room to find Alexander sitting up in bed, his face still partially obscured by bandages.
"Good morning, Alexander," Evelyn greeted him with a warm smile, pushing aside her internal conflict for the moment. "How are you feeling today?"
Alexander's eyes lit up upon seeing her. "Ah, there you are, my love. I've missed you."
Evelyn suppressed a pang of guilt, reminding herself that she was doing what she believed was best for him. She approached his bedside and took a seat, ready to navigate another day in this complicated charade.
"Alexander, I need to talk to you about something important," she began, her voice gentle yet resolute. "There are some things we need to discuss."
He looked at her expectantly, his gaze filled with trust and affection. "Of course, darling. Anything you want to talk about, I'm all ears."
Evelyn took a deep breath, gathering her thoughts. "You were in a car accident, Alexander. It was a serious accident, and as a result, you sustained injuries that have affected your memory. You don't remember your family, your life before the accident, or even me."
Alexander's brows furrowed in confusion, and a flicker of fear crossed his eyes. "I... I don't remember? How is that possible?"
Evelyn reached out and gently took his hand, her touch meant to offer comfort. "Memory loss can happen after a traumatic event like the one you experienced. It's a temporary condition, and with time, there's a chance you'll regain your memories. But for now, we need to focus on your recovery and give your mind the space it needs to heal."
Alexander's expression shifted from confusion to a mix of frustration and sadness. "But what about my family? Can't they help me remember?"
Evelyn glanced at him sympathetically, her heart aching for the pain he was experiencing. "Your family is here, Alexander. They care about you deeply and want to support you through this journey. We can arrange a meeting with them if you're ready."
Alexander's eyes widened, hope glimmering within them. "Yes, please. I need to see them, to feel some connection to my past."
Evelyn nodded, her resolve firming once again. She understood the importance of family in the healing process and the role they could play in aiding Alexander's recovery.
"I will arrange a meeting with your family, Alexander," she assured him, her voice filled with determination. "But I want you to remember that we're here for you. We'll navigate this together, step by step."
