Lockwood walked into Winkmans office. He had been summoned by the boss himself, so he knew whatever it was, it was important. Lockwood let out a low grunt as he walked into the office, and saw none other than Little Miss Goody Two Shoes herself sitting in one of the chairs across from Winkman. He relaxed a bit when he saw George, but made sure not to take his eyes off of Lucy as he sat down in the chair beside her.
"Running a bit late, huh Lockwood?" Winkman gave him a skeptical look.
"Just a few seconds, I didn't miss anything." Lockwood felt his anger rise, but made sure not to show it. He always had a difficult time hiding his emotions around Winkman; the man who had killed his parents, and had not only gotten away with it, but took over the organization that had been in his family for generations.
"Maybe you're not ready for such a task after all," Said Winkman airly, as Lockwood bit the inside of his lip, struggling to hide his hatred for the man.
"I'm ready for anything, especially if it's easy enough for her to do," He added, pointing at Lucy beside him, who gave him a glare.
"Excuse me?" She exclaimed glaring angrily at him. Winkman smiled smugly, clearly amused at the two.
"Good to know you two can get along as well as any old couple, because that's your job for the next little bit," Winkman said as he leaned back into his chair and propped his feet up on his desk with a smirk. Lucy and Lockwood stared at him, mouths agape.
"Ohhh no. You can not be serious" Lucy shook her head. "He hates my guts"
"And she hates mine!" Lockwood objected as well. George let out a chuckle. He very clearly had known about this for a while.
"Great, y'all are already in character" Winkman laughed at his own joke and the other three faked a laugh as usual. It wasn't unusual for Winkman to make a bad joke and expect everyone to laugh, so they always went along with it. They didn't want Winkman to have them disposed of for hurting his feelings. "If you do not want it, I'm sure there are plenty who would jump at this opportunity." He said nonchalantly.
"No sir, I want it!" They both blurted at the same time before glaring at each other again.
"Good," Winkman said, "I'm having some trouble with the Fittes family. You two are to work your way in-as at least soldiers-and report back to me anything you learn."
"Why us sir?" Lucy stirred nervously in her seat. Lockwood thought it was strange, but suspected she was just scared.
"Why not? You two are both new, Fittes won't know you're with me, and you've proven yourselves reliable enough." He answered, surprising Lockwood. He thought Winkman would have just looked at her like she was stupid and moved on.
"The real question is where is ol' Scotty at? Shouldn't he be the one telling us all this?" Scotty was the underboss who normally handled things with Lucy and Lockwood, since they had recently moved up to Capos. But most importantly he had the position that Lockwood wanted before he could finally stab Winkman in the back, like he had done years before to his parents. Winkman ignored the question and simply said.
"Depending on how reliable you two remain, there could be a big future ahead of you." He replied simply, ignoring the question with a dark smile. He didn't have to say it, Lockwood understood. This was his chance to finally get what he always wanted, and he couldn't help but break a smile at the corner of his mouth. Lucy gasped beside him. She was always shocked by everything, almost like she didn't want to be here. Lockwood didn't trust her one bit, but everyone else did, so it wasn't like he could say anything about it at the moment, not until he was in charge.
Winkman explained to them that they would be hanging out at a bar owned by Fittes while pretending to be a couple, and befriend a man who goes by Kipps, then work their way into the family. It seemed simple enough to Lockwood, the hardest part would be having to put up with Lucy.
"And George?" Lockwood asked, pointing at George who was in the corner. He knew George wouldn't have just been there for no reason.
"He will be watching after you," Winkman said, then dismissed them from his office.
"I will be researching the backgrounds of everyone you meet, and making sure you two don't get into trouble," George explained as they walked out.
"So you're basically our babysitter who can do background checks? Great" Grumbled Lucy.
"Well Goody Two Shoes, I will pick you up in an hour and a half, and we'll go together. Now if you'll excuse me, I need to get ready." Lockwood tried a flirty smile to get in character, but it just felt wrong.
Lucy raised an eyebrow amused.
"What do you have to do to get ready, put on a fancier suit?" She huffed amusingly.
"Yes actually," He said smugly, starting to walk off.
Lucy's eyes went wide, surprised and confused as the realization hit her.
"Wait, how do you know where I live!?" Lucy called after him, alarmed now that she realized what he had said.
"I have my ways" He called back.
