“Ugh, my clothes are soaked.” Gina grumbled, squeezing water from the edge of her shirt.

Ricky's amused gaze landed on her.

“I mean that's what happens when you spontaneously jump in a lake.” he joked.

“Last time I checked, you did it first, asshole,” she shot back at him. He simply laughed in response before taking off his shirt to wring out as well. Quickly, she looked away, her cheeks burning. She still wasn't entirely used to being around people—especially guys—and the emotions their evening swim stirred up in her were overwhelming.

Once his shirt was back on his body, Gina glanced in his direction. Even with his hair still dripping and shirt sticking to his lean body, he looked like an absolute idiot—an cute idiot she couldn't help but laugh at. Though Gina's own clothes were just as wet, she bit the inside of her cheek to keep from laughing.

She walked silently beside him as they made their way back to where their stuff was. She watched him walk ahead of her, noticing his head hanging low. Gina opened her mouth to ask him what was wrong, but before she could get a word out, he suddenly looked up at her with a faint smile on his lips.

“It's a long walk home from here, so I better get going,” he said, slinging his backpack over his shoulder as he began walking away.

The words fumbled out of her mouth before her brain could catch up, “Do you want to stay at my house?”

Ricky froze, turning back to face her. "What?” His lips parted ever so slightly as he waited for her to continue. Gina fidgeted nervously with her hands, her cheeks growing pink. She had intended to sound inviting, but her voice caught in her throat as she spoke. “I mean,” she stammered, “It's only a 5 minute walk from here and I can give you some spare clothes,” she added.

Ricky paused for a moment as if considering her offer before moving to quickly type something on his phone. After finishing his text, he looked up and smiled slightly, giving her a nod.

“Lead the way, Chauffeur.” She rolled her eyes and took off toward her house, with Ricky following close behind.

Once they were inside, Gina turned the TV up, drowning out the noise of Ricky running a shower down the hall. Her mind was reeling from everything that had happened in the last hour. The biggest question being, why did she let Ricky into her home? It wasn’t something she did often, as she hardly knew him. But something seemed off about him as they walked to her house. As if he didn't want to go home. Maybe that’s why she let a virtual stranger into her house. Though at this point, Gina was considering him a friend.

She grabbed a couple of oversized clothes she rarely wore and Ricky’s boxers from the dryer, having washed his school clothes. Though she wasn’t expecting guests, she had been trained to be a suitable host.

“Left you some clothes by the door.” She yelled through the bathroom door.

“Thanks.” She heard from the other side.

Gina headed back to the living room and continued watching whatever was playing for a couple minutes more, when she spotted Ricky in the corner of her eye in her fresh clothes. As he wandered around, casually observing the surroundings, Gina tried to quell the nagging thought that he looked cute in her baggy clothes. She stayed silent as he studied the multitude of framed photos and knick-knacks scattered around the room.

He turned to face her. “Nice place.”

“Thanks,” she said. “I know it's not much but-”

“I don’t know,” Ricky interrupted. “You could’ve had gargoyles surrounding the place.”
