Felix stepped out into the brisk night air, inhaling deeply. He thought about the conversation he had just had and began to cry. Flashes of his parents words ran through his mind, as if they were raiding a sunken pirate ship for a secret stash of treasure, tearing up all his happy memories with no concern for the damage they did in the process.
"When will you get a girlfriend?"
"You're lying"
"I didn't raise a fag"
"Get out"
Tears fell as Felix raced away from his childhood home. He ran, stumbling blindly as he tried to think where he would go. With a pang, he realised he had left everything he owned at home. "No." He thought. "I can't call it that anymore". He began to sob heavily, chest heaving, vision blurring. His legs moved on their own, taking him to the only place he would be safe.
He raised his fist to knock on the door but it swung open before he could. A cute face looked out at him, concern etched in its features. "Lix, are you alright?"
Felix threw himself into his boyfriend's arms, crying his heart out. "I'm not alright. Not at all. My parents found out about us."
"You told them?"
Felix nodded. The arms around him grew stiff, cold. The love of his life, the one person who accepted him for who he was, pulled away, a look of disgust on his face.
"Babe?"
There was a minute of silence before the blond tried again. "Baby?"
"Don't talk to me Lee"
Terror crashed down on Felix like a wave on a raging sea. He looked up at his boyfriend in disbelief. "What are you doing? Am I not good enough? I know I'm ugly, I know I'm broken but you said we all deserve a chance at love. Those were your exact words"
"And I remember telling you a week later I wasn't comfortable coming out to my parents yet. But you went and fucking told your parents you had a boyfriend and I can't keep seeing you if there's a chance of my family finding out through your folks. And I said that at the start of our relationship. But I feel different now"
Felix looked up at him, full of hope. "You mean you'll stay with me?"
"No. I mean I like girls and even if you were one, you wouldn't be my type. You're too clingy."
Felix started to cry again.
"See? Like that. All I did was tell you the truth and you're crying like a fucking baby. Grow the fuck up"
Felix tried to move towards him, arms out but the other boy pushed him roughly. The blond stumbled backwards down the stairs. He fell to the ground, hitting his head on the concrete as the front door slammed shut. He screamed and cried, getting slowly to his feet. He stumbled up the steps and began to bang on the door, yelling at the top of his lungs. Eventually, his knees gave out, surrendering to the weight of his sorrow.
He drifted off, dreaming of the only thing he wanted.
He dreamed of waking up to find himself in his own bed with only memories of a bad dream. He dreamed of turning over to see his boyfriends sleeping face. He dreamed of his mother and father calling him down for breakfast. Dreamed of sitting down at the kitchen table and eating fluffy pancakes doused in syrup, covered in berries.
Then he woke up. On the street, outside his ex's house. His whole body was stiff. A bird had shitted on his face and roused him from his not so peaceful slumber. The bird excretion was probably an improvement. He let out a bitter laugh and checked his watch.
2am
He picked himself up, sniffling slightly. He sighed, knowing the only place he could go now. He dialled the number on his phone, bracing himself for the gloating he would have to endure.
"Hello?" Jisung's inquisitive voice was surrounded by the sound of heavy rock music and laughter.
Felix summoned all his courage before answering. "Hi" he said in a small voice.
"Lix? Is that you?"
"Yeah"
"You've been crying"
"Yeah"
"He broke up with you"
It wasn't a question. He knew Felix too well to not understand immediately.
"Yeah"
"I told you he was trouble"
"Yeah" the last agreement was a little more dejected sounding than the others
Jisung sighed. "I'm at a work party so I'm at the park. If you make your way over here, I'll give you a lift home."
"No"
"No?"
"They found out Ji" Felix broke down again, sobbing uncontrollably
"I know that Lix. You're too upset for it to have just been over that asshole of an ex. I meant your new home. My apartment."
Felix gasped and his spirits rose "Thank you so much Sung. I'll start walking. Be there in 5"
"See you then"
Felix hung up and forced his feet to move. He was reluctant to move because if he left, he'd have to face the fact that he was no longer welcome here. He sighed and began to walk. A drop of rain fell and more followed. Felix picked up the pace, almost running now. The park was in sight when suddenly, a tall man ran into him, sending him flying off his feet. He had a hood covering his face and he didn't speak a word. He extended a gloved hand and the blond boy grabbed it, hoisting himself up. The mysterious man ran off and before Felix could go after him, Jisung was there.
He had seen it all and was ranting about how people needed to be more careful. He checked up on Felix and then led him to his car, opening the door for him and giving him a tight hug before getting in the drivers side.
"Don't worry Lix. We'll go back to my apartment and we'll watch a movie. Of course, I knew he'd break up with you so I have a shit ton of ice cream in the freezer."
As his friend prattled on, trying to make him feel better, the fairy-like boy looked out the window, watching the trees flash by and wondering why the hell a random stranger had gone to all that trouble just to put a sketch of a woman in his hand when he helped him up.
