The festival is as lively as it is in his memory.
Reo doesn't have much recollection of it; the last time he'd been to a fireworks festival was over a decade ago, along with Baya, because the younger him was so persistent on going despite the extra lesson on classical instruments that he had to take that evening.
Today, though, he doesn't have Baya by his side.
Today, he's supposed to be meeting up with Nagi. A date, dare he say, although that particular term wasn't the one they used when they were planning tonight's agenda a couple weeks ago. Still, the hopeless romantic part of himself believes that one should be allowed to dream. After all, "keep on dreaming" is the only thing that he can do at this point of his life.
Having given up on scouring the crowd for the familiar milky white hair of his best-friend—his super lazy best-friend who probably had overslept again and is running late now—Reo chooses to sit on a moldy bench in a secluded area under a huge tree.
A part of him worries that Nagi will cancel their plan, or perhaps simply forgets. Reo isn't sure which one is worse. Yet, another part of him aggressively tampers down those negative thoughts.
If Nagi really doesn't end up showing up, there must have been something more important that Nagi had to attend. Reo knows Nagi would never be as cruel as to lead someone on only to give them false hope. At least, not intentionally—so there's that.
He's so caught up in his thoughts that he fails to realize a series of footsteps come nearing him from behind. Only when a dead weight settles atop his head and a pair of arms dangle from his shoulders does Reo register the new company.
"Nagi!"
"...In the flesh," Nagi replies dryly. "You seemed so deep in thought. What were you thinking about?"
A blush creeps up Reo's face. He can't very well tell Nagi that he'd doubted him and almost believed that he'd bailed just now.
"It's nothing," Reo lies. He gets up and dusts himself off. "Are you hungry? Have you eaten yet? How about some yakitori or ikayaki while we wait for the fireworks to start?" Throwing his fanservice grin, he adds, "It's my treat."
Nagi, apparently, is not really impressed with his flamboyant act. "Why is it always your treat? I'm also making money now. I can buy one for myself, or even treat you."
'Because I love spoiling you,' Reo's inner voice says almost immediately.
The problem is, he doesn't want to venture into that uncharted category just yet. It's rare enough for them to find a time to hang out with just the two of them—after the Blue Lock project ended, they had immediately gotten scouted by J1 leagues teams, since then their lives have gotten significantly busier—and the last thing Reo wants here is to make this evening awkward.
"Well," Slipping on his sheepish smile, he clears his throat. "What's the point of being friends with the heir of one of the largest companies in this country if you won't even let me treat you to some snacks?"
"I'm not friends with you just because you're a rich guy, you know?"
"I know," says Reo, his gaze softens at Nagi's indignation. "Sorry, that was a lame joke. Anyways, don't think too much about it. It's fine. Street foods cost basically nothing anyway."
And it's true. Even without all the wealth he's inheriting, his paycheck as a starting player in a major football league is more than enough for him to live comfortably. Saying this, Reo knows for a fact that Nagi actually earns more than him. And it's not that Reo forgets about it; it's just that he likes spoiling Nagi too much.
"Can we just get some hamburgers then?"
"I'd buy all the hamburgers you want, but you know they don't sell western foods at a place like this." Reo smiles exasperatedly as he reaches for Nagi's hand. "Come on now! The fireworks show is gonna start soon. Let's grab a bite before we watch it. I'm starving too!"
