Mellie's POV
It was quiet as I drove my brothers to school on this crisp, cloudy day in mid-March. It was Wednesday morning, and Bella would be arriving next Sunday evening.

The only one's excited for her return were Uncle Charlie and her godbrother, Jacob Black.

No one was happy about this as Bella was entitled, obnoxious brat but you wouldn't realize it at first glance as she looks like someone shoved an enormous eggplant up her ass preventing her shitting for the past 1,000,000 years.

At least that's how she was when I saw her last when she was 14 and she 'put her foot down' and started refusing visitation with Charlie. Despite the court mandates that she visit him every other Christmas and spend two months of the summer with him, she only ever visited for two weeks.

Then there was the matter of child support payments, Charlie was supposed to pay $435 every month but somehow wound up paying $1,500 every month.

Don't even get me started on the wedding invitation that Renee sent him when she remarried! She knows full well that Charlie isn't fully over her and still wants to get back together. She sent that invitation to cause drama and hurt him more.

It bothers me to no end the mistreatment he allowed at the hand of his ex wife and daughter, but he allows it so what can I do.

I pulled up to the school and said "Okay, so Wednesday is debate and photography club plus chess practice for the tournament and art project for the competition...right?" Both my brothers nodded and I added "So I need to pick you up by 5'o clock?" Damian said "Yep!" Causing me to nod before turning to open the door.

Only for Kai to lock it using his switch from the passenger side. I turned to him in confusion and asked "Kai? What are you-?" He interrupted me by saying "You've been acting strange since last weekend, and we both know that this isn't just about Isabella's impending arrival, what's wrong?" I looked at him before glancing anxiously at the school as the bell rang signaling the time for entry. I sighed and turned back to them while saying "I'll tell you at lunch, okay? Right now we should head to class."

Kai hesitated before Damian popped up from the backseat and asked "Promise?" I smiled slightly and wrote an 'X' over my heart with my finger before covering my eyes and mouth and muffledly saying "Promise" making them both smile before getting out of my car.

~~~timeskip~~~
At lunch I explained everything, as promised, and my brothers sat there stewing "So you're anxious because you don't understand why our grandparents would pass the mantel over to you?" Kai asked making me nod.
"Well, if I were our grandparents, I'd give it to you because you're so compassionate and understanding that you'd be like a maternal presence in the community" Damian said with a smile causing me to smile back.
"Really? I thought they did it because she has no future outside of Forks" Kai said earning a smack on the back of his head from Damian.
"What?! It's not a bad thing!" Kai then turned to me and said "Mom and Uncle Charlie have clearly made their careers up and have no room to take on more responsibility. Bella's out because she's selfish and irresponsible and possibly not a real Swan. Then Damian and I have training for careers set outside of Forks. So that only leaves you, be honest, have you really ever thought about leaving Forks?"
I sat back and actually thought about it, in truth the thought of leaving Forks gave me agoraphobia. I just couldn't picture myself anywhere else then the ever cold, cloudy and rainy small town in the middle of the woods. Forks was home, always has been, and always will be.
I shook my head and said "No, not really" Kai nodded and said "Once Damian and I graduate high school, you'll have no more responsibilities and you'll be free to lead our family how you deem fit" Damian piped up and said "With the full support of your brothers!"
Kai rolled his eyes and said "She already knew that!" Damian scoffed and retaliated "How could she have known that? She's not a mind reader!" "Because it was obvious!" Kai shot back "How would that have been obvious?!" Damian said exasperated.
I giggled which cut off their bickering and made them look at me with doe eyes "I didn't think either of you would let me go at this alone" Kai shot a smug look at Damian "But it's nice to hear out loud that you won't" Damian returned Kai's smug look as Kai rolled his eyes.
The bell rang signaling the end of lunch and I send to throw away my trash when I bumped into someone "Oh! I'm so sorry-!" I started only to be cut off by familiar molten gold eyes. A squeak escaped the back of my throat and a blush flared up within my cheeks.
I mumbled a quick apology again before darting away.
3rd POV
The golden eyed person that Melanie ran into smirked and chuckled at their second mate's behavior as their other mate walked up to them with amusement "Don't be mean my love, I think you scared her off" the first smirked before pulling their partner into an embrace where they pecked them on the lips "Oh, I doubt that~"
Suddenly a copper hair teen with the same golden eyes as the first two walked up looking annoyed and said "Are you two forgetting that she's human? She doesn't belong in our world!"
The two rolled their eyes and said "Fuck off, Edward" before walking away.
Mellie's POV
I got off of school and drove to the Lodge where I put on an apron and started bussing tables.
I couldn't get what happened at lunch out of my head, we had classes together, actually I had multiple classes with the Cullens. Thanks to my brilliant brother Kai's tutoring both Damian and I got to skip a year whereas he skipped two. Kai and I were both juniors in high school while Damian was a freshman.
Because of this, I spent a lot of time in their presence but never really talked to them aside from exchanging pleasantries.
Maybe I could change that...
