The rain poured down relentlessly, as Johnny and I were running out of time. My stomach made turns and I felt my heart slowly sink into my chest. We were going to get caught. Something that was supposed to be stupid and fun would now turn into a long lecture from Darry, and possibly, some unwanted time in the cooler.

I looked at Johnny as he attempted to jam the key into admission with no luck. The high rush of adrenaline I felt was no more, and I was just worried; out of my fucking mind.

"Johnny, start the damn car!" I exclaimed, my eyes wide as I then noticed the man nearly sprinting to the beat-up van despite the rain.

"Can't you see I'm tryin'?" Johnny spoke with his tone still, and his accent seemed to thicken as he was clearly under immense pressure.

"Here, let me try." I crawled over from the backseat, shoving the key into the admission for a last time as my face then lit up.

With a roar from the engine, Johnny stepped on the gas, and we were off.

"We hardly made it!" I exclaimed, falling back into the seat as Johnny then sped off from the parking lot of the gas station.

"I know, I could hardly focus since you were pullin' on my leg." He said bitterly, adjusting the rearview in front of him.

"Yeah?" I said sarcastically.

"Yeah," I responded, as I attempted a more chill tone, trying to hide the panic of my tone, and the rushed feelings engraved into my mind. I couldn't believe what I had just done, let alone who I was doing it with, and my mind began to wander.

"What if Ponyboy hadn't crawled up to the front of the seat?" I thought to myself, feeling a sense of guilt and uneasiness the longer the thought marinated my mind, making it nearly impossible to look at the road in front of me, the rain being unaccommodating.

"I'm starting to feel like this is a bad idea, I mean, we just stole somebodies car, man. I don't want that on my conscious." I said, looking at Ponyboy through the rearview, who was eating candy bars from out of the brown box.

"I guess... but I promise, we ain't gone keep it." He chuckled, sounding more laid-back about a situation he'd usually never comply too.

"Plus, I thought we'd do something since I'm leaving real soon," Ponyboy mumbled, which made my stomach turn, and my heart drops.

Ponyboy and I were hardly apart, he understood me in ways I didn't necessarily understand myself, aside from Dally who'd rather spend his time locked away in a cellar, behind bars.

"You never said you were leaving? Where are you headed?" I asked, my breath hitching slightly, as I attempted to make out the road ahead of me.

"I didn't mention it because I didn't think too— but, if you really wanna know..." He went on, pausing to fix his posture and straighten himself out as the news he'd soon deliver was going to be major.

"I'm leaving off to college. Well, at least I think I am." He continued, "I'm starting something new for myself, that's just all." He said, looking down at his hands which were so neatly displayed on his lap.

"That's all, huh?" Ponyboy looked down, and seemingly disappointed. Almost as if he wanted me to say more, but I couldn't as my feelings were heightened.
