August 14, 2020, the summer before senior year

"Can you shuffle? I kinda suck at it" Angelina asked Adelaide as she tossed a deck of pink playing cards across the glass table. Adelaide gave her a quick, "I know you do, I was kinda enjoying watching you struggle however." before grabbing the worn-down pack, beginning her shuffling and dealing.

Right as she was dealing out the last round of cards to the table of girls, a loud laugh could be heard from inside the open glass doors. "I mean who do you think they are anyways? They look too old to be high schoolers," Angie piped back up. "Dude there's no way they're college-aged, look at 'em. I mean that one still has braces," Nidia pointed out, her thick curly hair bouncing as she tried to whip her head around to peer behind her at the group of girls, questionably high school-aged, all wearing some form of athleisure.

The 'freakishly tall' group of girls as Adelaide had put it had walked out of the elevator and into the hotel lobby not long after her own group had gotten there, quickly filling the high ceilings with their laughter and carried voices. The mild Colorado evening permitted the large floor-to-ceiling glass doors to be opened, allowing for the group of journalists to hear 'not quite high school' girls' loud laughter and shrieks.

"I mean you'd think they're here for the workshops like us, but I don't recognize any of them. Besides, they don't look like yearbook kids you know?" Adelaide added. She refused to admit out loud that she had noticed the group long before their conversation became loud enough to travel outside and into the blanket-shrouded-hoodie-wearing group of student journalists.

Why? Well quite frankly she was a lesbian disaster and a certain tall blonde had made eye contact with her on more than one occasion in the past 40 minutes that the two groups were sitting, each caught up in their own games and conversations. She was tempted to catch another glimpse of the girl in the white tank, but before she could finish her very lovely escapade of her wandering eyes, "They are definitely some kind of athlete, I mean look at them, do they look like they know what a pica is?" Angelina offered again before picking up her cards and began passing them around the circle of six girls, the intense game of spoons ensued.

"Maybe not, but do you see the arms on some of them? Totally athletes, total hotties" Lilly offered before trying to subtly grab a spoon from the center of the table, but not without catching the attention of Nidia, who lunged for another spoon, setting off a chain reaction that left Adelaide wheezing like a seal when Angelina and her co-lifestyles editor Liv fought for the last spoon, nearly ending up in a heap on the floor. Charlie, a blonde-headed genius of a sports editor interjected, "Ok, ok stop before one of you loses an eye or Ad passes out."

"Please dear god not again." Lilly gets out between residual giggles. "I pinky promise not to pass out in a stairwell again, it was one time guys. Plus, it was Texas, it was hot," Adelaide, or Ad for short, says.

"How about we prevent any eye-losing or passing outing that might happen by ending spoons and choosing something else? Don't get me wrong I would love to witness another brawl but I would prefer if I didn't have to explain to Ms. Brown why I sat back and watched her editors kill each other?" the brunette finished before gesturing for the cards back.

Ad decided now might be a good time to sneak another fleeting look between her and Ms. Mystery Barbie, the name she had decided to call the tall blonde inside the lobby, only to find her already staring at her. The blonde quickly turned her head away and seemingly continued her conversation without batting an eye.

Adelaide used this time to study her. The girl's sharp jawline and upturned nose were only showcased by the girl's quick rotation of her head, added to her piercing grey eyes and highlighted blonde hair, which was currently tied into a bun around the crown of her head. Before she deemed herself creepy beyond repair, the rising senior editor in chief too turned her attention back to her friends surrounding her.

"I'm kind of tired, could we maybe not play any more card games and just talk or like, play truth or dare or something?" The voice of Charlie expressed. A chorus of 'I'm down' and 'okie' sounded from around the table.

The game started out tame enough, staying with mostly truths and only a few dares, one ending in Charlie's hair in lopsided pigtails. However as the night grew later and the stars above them became brighter, the truths ventured into the telling of first kisses and dares into calling various classmates and semi-acquaintances, leaving Lilly with a very awkward conversation with an old lab partner. Adelaide could feel eyes on her, her brain told her it was just her friends around her, but her women-obsessed heart said it was totally the hot blondie. (Her brain secretly hoped it was the hot blondie too, after all, Ad is but a silly little lesbian who has a soft spot for blondes).

She finally gave into her thoughts and snuck yet another peek at the girl (6th? or was it 7th time tonight?) She was only slightly taken aback this time when her own green eyes met gray from across the upscale cabin-themed lobby.

Suddenly, Adelaide's name was called, and she was brought back to reality, well, her reality, that of a gay sixteen-year-old who would never have the balls to speak to said stranger in her life. She would simply rather stare at her, memorizing her face to add it to the list of women that appear in her delusional fantasies she uses to fall asleep or escape her painfully confusing AP calc class, I mean it's not her fault her only knowledge of limits comes from Mean Girls, she's just a teenage girl. "Dude, are you even listening to me? Truth or dare?" Liv questions

"No, she is not, the girl is too busy staring at Ms. Blonde Muscles over there. Told you you had a type," Ad's ever-hilarious best friend pointed out. "Oh my god shut up I know I do I can't help it I see woman I go awooga it's that easy. It just helps that she's tall, blonde, and her arms totally look amazing in that tank." Adelaide attempted and failed to defend herself, never beating the silly little lesbian allegations.

"Fine then, you have no choice you simply have to pick dare for ignoring me," Liv faked hurt as she crossed her arms and turned her head up, pretending to wipe away tears and sniffle. Ad took a deep breath before responding, muttering a quick "Jesus save me" under her breath, "Ok fine, dare."
