You married me off! How is it not fair that I react like that?"
You yelled back at you parents choking on your tears, before exiting the house shutting the door, hard, behind you and making you way to the barn.
If you'd have been told that your fate was to be bestowed due to your parents greediness you would have not believe it. They claimed to have done that for your own good, to them that was a kindness, they've provided a life of riches.
You were ripe and ready to be harvested. You surely weren't fooling yourself to believe you'd ever find a love match but still they didn't even considers your opinion in the matter. A man came and made arrangements with you father one day. You've asked if that was him, they simply said no.
It was that man's brother you were to be wed with. You knew he was older than you, older even than the man that came to make the arrangements. What had gotten unto your parents at the moment of the deal were money, they hadn't really though of you. What if you future husband would mistreat you? What if he didn't respect you? What if all he just wanted was a womb to bare children?
Wet cheeks and blurry sight you stopped yourself from further desperation. You didn't talk to anybody till the day of your wedding.
You wouldn't even meet the man till that very day. You didn't even know what he looked like. You were blind of what was your life to be. You had been traded just like cows.
"Don't pout sweetheart. There's nothing to be sad about. It's your day, a life of comforts awaits you." And your mother just went on. "It is more of what I got for myself" she said looking at the musty wallpaper of your bedchamber.
She could not make up the difference between a marriage of convenience and a real marriage. She thought she was doing you a favour. You weren't going to blame her for not understanding, but again she had willingly decided to marry. She had found love and settled, happily, for the modest farmhouse you lived in. You didn't got the chance.
The wedding day came and go pretty fast. Big ceremony and all.
Here you were walking down the aisle, bridal veil covering your face walking among people you didn't knew, moments before seeing your husband-to-be for the first time.
You quickly got into position by his side, you didn't really dare to look at him, frightened of you didn't knew what. You took a deep breath.
Soon the celebration came to an end. Your, now, husband wasn't an ugly man, this much could be said, he was quite the opposite. His face was aged, without a doubt by time and hard work.
You've been sitting by Arthur's side all night watching family and friends have fun on your behalf, while you on the other side have been miserable.
***
Two months had passed from you wedding.
Sitting on the chaise long, in your living room, you smoked your cigarette looking at the fire crackling before you. You've picked up the habit of smoking, knowing the Shelby's it was impossible not to pick up some corrosive habit, lucky you it was only cigarettes.
The Shelby family was one of a kind, not all of them were bad of course but you wouldn't be found growing fond of them any time soon. Oh, and Thomas Shelby he was just the icing on the fucking cake. You've seen quite a lot of their little gang life and arrangements.
Arthur's little brother ordering him around and taking advantage of his insecurities and problems. Thomas the brain, Arthur the brawn. He was the mad dog, the broken man so consumed by his insecurities that did awful things and drank his problems away.
However, Arthur Shelby wasn't the worst that could happened to you. He didn't beat you, disrespect you or hit you. On the other hand he didn't even tried to make an effort with you. You had been grateful for that in the beginning. You were newly married to a stranger and he understood that, he let you get acquainted with him but it never went further than that. Now when you said he wasn't the worse you meant that he was a decent men, troubled but nice overall.
