Brave, was never a word that someone used to describe me. It was always either bashful, well-mannered, or shy even. Brave never came up.
In my 18 years of living, I never disobeyed my parents, ever. I've never been brave enough to deliberately go against my parents' wishes. Sure, when I was younger I would mouth off at them and be a brat, but when it came down to it I always obeyed their rules.
So you can imagine my surprise when I found myself dialing Zoé's number on the house phone. I was breaking two of papá's rules right now. One, using the house phone without permission, and two, talking to Zoé.
I bring the phone up to my ear hearing the ring start to sound throughout my room. "Hello?" My breath stiffened as Zoé's voice echoed through the phone speaker. "Hi, Zoe? This is Leilani Giovolvi from the Starbucks!" I responded. For a while, Zoe didn't say anything, until she suddenly spoke, "Oh Leilani, I forgot I gave you my number lol!"
Who says "Lol" out loud I thought.
"I have to go right now, but I'm having a party tonight if you'd like to come." She offered. I pondered over the thought for a while. A party just like the ones Matteo used to go to. "I'd love to go" I responded.
"Ok cool I'll pick you up at 9, so be ready!" She replied, before hanging up. I smiled while connecting the phone back to the hook.
I'm finally going to get the teenage experience, I thought with a ghost of a smile on my face. I looked at the clock, it marked 5:17 p.m. That means I have about 4 hours to get ready which is plenty of time.
I walk down the stairs to be with my mama. She was washing the dishes with her hair out in a curly afro. I swear that woman just doesn't know how to relax. I sat on the island while she washed the dishes and she gave me a kind smile, "Hey, are you ok? Do you need anything?", she asked.
I bit my lip nervously before replying "Um yeah.. actually I wanted to know if I could go to a.. party?" I asked with a smile small. Clank.
I flinched before looking up to see what made that loud noise, Mama had dropped to the dish she was washing. "A party," She asked while her hands were trembling slightly, "Absolutely not Lei Lei think about what your father would say?!" She added while picking up the broken pieces.
While reaching down to help her I retailed, "Why not?! Matteo always went to parties and to be honest I couldn't care less about what papá ha-" Before I could even finish my sentence I felt a sharp pain hit my cheek.
My mother had slapped me. "Don't ever disrespect your father like that! He has worked too hard for to be so nonchalant about his feelings!" Mama yelled. I couldn't say anything because ultimately she was my mom, What could I say? I just stared at her with glossy eyes before retreating upstairs and into my room with the door slamming behind me.
"And do not slam any doors in the house!" Mama muffled from downstairs. I just rolled my eyes before sitting down on my bed and crying.
I never understood why they treated me so differently than Matteo. In their eyes, Matteo can do no wrong. He can do whatever he wants and they won't even bat an eye. Well fuck that.
I wiped away my tears and stopped wallowing in self-pity. "I don't care I'm going to that party," I said to myself. I'm tired of my family holding me back, I want to experience life too and I refuse to be held up in this house for all of my life.
I checked the time 7:35 pm, and it read. I only have an hour and 30 minutes to get ready. I open my room door and go into Mama and Papa's room. Of course, if I was going to a party I was going to need some makeup. I sneak into their master bathroom and grab all of Mama's eyeshadow, foundation, and anything I can think of.
Despite being "sheltered" I was always very interested in makeup, always sneaking into my mother's room to steal her products. So I knew a little bit of what I was doing, I didn't know the new makeup trends so I tried my best to recreate some of my mom's teen high school looks.
When I was finally finished I looked amazing. I had a smokey eye which made my honey brown eyes pop. I also added a little cat eye and some false eyelashes that I found in my mom's room. My lips were decorated with brown lip liner and lipgloss combo, creating the perfect two-toned lip look. In all my face looked amazing, now I just have to figure out what I'm going to wear.
I don't have a lot of party clothes considering I've never been to one and I dress pretty modestly anyway, courtesy of my dad of course. I rummaged through my drawers and closet trying to find something to wear until I finally decided on a simple black skirt that had an almost metallic look to it. The shirt I decided on was a simple brown tank top with a cheetah print pattern on it.
It's not the most trendy clothes but it'll work, I thought and for shoes, I wore some simple Mary Janes pump paired with a small Marc Jacobs tote bag.
I checked the time and it marked 8:38 pm. "I only have a few more minutes until Zoé gets here," I said out loud. I walk into the bathroom connected to my room and spray some of my Channel perfume on before putting on some Vivien Westwood earrings and necklaces.
Checking the time again I realized that it was 8:58. Soon, I heard the house phone ringing again so I hurried up and picked it up. "Hello?" I asked with a question in my voice. "Hey, I'm outside." Zoé's voice rang through my ear. I hurriedly hung up the phone with I smile on my face before spraying myself once more with the perfume and opening my window.
I took in a shaky breath, my room is on the second floor. I pushed away my fear and slowly slipped one leg out of the window, "Ok this seems pretty easy," I stated before pulling my other foot through the window. Slowly but surely my whole body was through the window and onto the roof, now I just had to figure out how to get down. I scooted over to the edge of the roof and let my legs hang from there. I looked down and saw a bush planted right under the roof.
So then I did what any other smart person would do and I jumped.
