Lady Yae Miko stood in front of me, watching as I trembled nervously. Strange... she seems to be... enjoying herself.

"Do you know why I called you here?" She asked. I shook my head.

"No." I say trying to match her steel cold gaze.

"Well, we had a nice little visit from your parents," I'm already assuming the worst.

"They came to surprise you. They were under the impression that you are starting your training here five hours before you actually do." Oh crap. Oh crap. Oh crap. That one lie I told my parents about where I was most of the day. I knew it was going to circle back someday. If they knew I wasn't at Mount Yougou all afternoon, they would kill me!

"Don't worry, I didn't tell them you weren't here. Although I must tell you, whatever you are hiding from them, won't stay a secret much longer." I know. Because I'm not supposed to want to be a samurai. Emiko Suzuki is supposed to be a shrine maiden, like her mother. And her grandmother, and her aunt, and every woman in my family going back hundreds of years. My last name is well-known in Nakarumi shrine. My brother is supposed to be a Samurai. Like my Dad, and his dad, and all the men in my family going back hundreds of years. Although, I desperately want that fate for myself. That's why every day in between my job at Kamisato estate and my training at Nakarumi shrine, I practice swordsmanship with a local sensei. In exchange for lessons, I complete small tasks for him. Although I don't know how much longer I can keep this up.

"I know." I sighed.

"Now go, Emiko. Mei is waiting for you to continue training." Yae Miko said. I nodded as I quickly rushed out of the indoor section of the shrine to the small clearing where all of the 15-year olds were listening to Lady Mei Sasaki's lecture. I stood among them and listened intently. That's how you get good grades. Listen.

"Ah, Miss Suzuki, you have finally decided to join us." Said Lady Mei.

"Apologies, Lady Mei." The only thought that could possibly go through my head at that moment was how much I wanted to impale her with my trusty katana. I saved up for so long for that Katana, in hopes that one day I would never have to listen to this lady's lectures ever again.

"Miss Suzuki, you would miss fewer lessons if you didn't get yourself in so much trouble. Anyway," She continued her lesson, but I was too distracted by some of my classmates snickering and giving me dirty looks.

I sighed.

Class is almost over. Class is almost over. I kept repeating to myself. When lady Mei finally let us go, I sprinted over to a bush where I had carefully hidden my katana. I put it in its sheath and rushed over to the house of my sensei. My parents couldn't even risk finding my katana, so I leave it at my sensei, Master Haru's house every night. I quickly knocked on his door.

"Hello? Oh, Emiko, what a lovely surprise!" He said, smiling. He's a sweet old man. He has white thinning hair and kind black eyes.

"Sensei! I have your Naku weed! I'm also here to drop off my Katana." I said.

"Oh, then, by all means, come in." Sensei ushered. He opened the door and let me into his dojo. Inside there was a large training area littered with training dummies and targets with lots of holes in them. Master Haru led me to a katana rack with names written next to each shelf. Each the names of his students written next to it. I put mine on the rack that said Emiko. I remember first putting my katana on that rack. My dreams had never felt closer than they did in moments like those. Moments like when the older kids helped me with my form. Or when Master Haru would tell me how advanced I was in wielding my weapon. I still thrive for those moments. I handed him the Naku Weeds wrapped in a pink cloth Sensei lent me.
