I smile as I greet Thoma. He smiles back, as per usual, but something seems off today. Almost as if I know something bad is going to happen. A weird prickly feeling at the back of my neck emerges. The only thing swirling around in my throat is, 'Thoma, be careful, if anything happened to you, I don't know what I'd do'. What would happen if he got hi vision taken away? Would he remember me? Would he remember working here? Before I know it, the glass of water I was filling up is overflowing, I don't even notice.
"Um... Emiko? We only have so much water." He says. I quickly stop pouring the water and get a towel to clean the mess.
"Sorry." I sigh before wiping my brow with the same towel. Not to wipe sweat, but to get the cold water on my forehead to wake me up. I take a deep breath and drink a huge gulp.
"Are you okay?" He asks. I nod, and am suddenly back to my calm, cool self, like it never happened.
"Yeah, just distracted." I continue my chores until our ten o'clock meeting with Ayaka. I drift off into the room with the traveller and Paimon by my side. The door slid open easily as I saw Ayaka standing there with a serious expression on her face.
"Welcome traveller." She says.
"Ayaka?" Exclaims Paimon. Ayaka nods.
"So, how did the tasks go?" She asks, her graceful composure, never faltering.
"They went good... pretty good..." Says Lumine.
"It was a little bit of a challenge, but we made it in the end!" Says Paimon. "We can never catch a break." Ayaka nods,
"Well then, you won't be very happy to hear this." I almost groan. The last thing I want is to have to snap people out of hallucinating vividly or forgetting things. I want to either wallow in self despair, or pure excitement. And you can probably guess which one I'm looking for.
"Master Masakatsu from Naganohora fireworks, who has been making some of the decoy visions has been arrested. We need your help." My heart leapt out of my chest. Finally some excitement! I was about to express my excitement when Ayaka continued, "Unfortunately, I can not risk Thoma, Emiko or I for the mission."
"What?" I cry. this is by far one of the most dissapointing things I have ever been told. "But why? I won't get caught, I promise!"
"You can't promise that." Says Thoma as he puts a hand on my shoulder. I want to argue but he's right. I can't promise that. I'll probably slip up and ruin it at any point. And I don't even have a vision which makes me the person the least likely to be going on this mission. I'm also only fifteen with no mission skill or training. I can still fight my way out. I've always been able too. I have skill, I have the strategy, I have the strength. And it's never been hard for me. I need to find a way to fight my way out.
"Fine." I say curtly. I feel like a child. A whining toddler. I hate this feeling. Lumine must think I'm a baby. My shift's almost over anyway. I can go home for lunch and spare the embarrassment. But then I'll also have to deal with my parents. Augh, whatever.
I make my way to the outside because like hell I'm staying there. The path is flat and gravelly. I remember noticing how it stort of crunches under my feet when I first came here. I asked my mom,
"Why do I have to do this?" She looked me in the eyes, slightly frustrated and replied,
"I told you this Emiko. It's important to make connections especially when your trying to make a name for yourself in the world." I knew deep down she was talking about Yuki and not me. But I felt for a moment she had confidence I can succeed in life, and not the expectation that I should. Thoma was the one to greet us with a bright smile and and his positive attitude. My mother seemed to like him until I heard her mutter under her breath,
