The people looked at them with a smile, "I heard you're selling fish for 5 coppers" a woman said weakly.
Jing Sheng observes the woman her hair was in a messy low bun with patch clothes, she looks very hungry and weak, her eyes shone in a desperate light as if praying to whatever God she serves to let it be true.
Jing Sheng at first was contemplating on raising the price of the fishes but seeing the desperate people lining up his heavy heart couldn't.
"Yes! 5 copper per fish 18 coppers for 4 fish"
Le Yan was startled when he looked at Jing Sheng, "are you sure you want to sell them at such a cheap price?" Le Yan inquires.
"Yes, it's better to help a brother and sister out in desperate times while still making profit. In the end these people are hungry and have a family to feed. Everything is expensive but the cheaper it is, the quicker they will come to me and buy, which means more customers" Jing Sheng smiles, sitting on the large rock in the grass.
Le Yan wasn't a business person but even he can understand that, in these times he'd look for the cheaper and affordable price so of course he'd come flocking to buy cheap fish!.
Le Yan smiles and serves the woman a fish, she immediately smiles as if she was brought back to life, taking the fish, paying and going.
Le Yan gave the money to Jing who then put them on a string. The two work well together.
On the upper side of the river, Chen Jianyu pouts as he picks the river spinach feeling that he has already picked enough he stands up. But knowing his little brother Chen Jinhai looks at him.
"Stoop back down if you're not going to help, don't leave from here" he said coldly.
"But I'm bored, I want to play"
"We can play when work is done, mom gave us work and let us finish first," Chen Jinhai insisted.
"No, mom gave you work! I want to play!"
"If you don't want to help, fine! Put stay right there where I can see you! I need to get these done and you're being a bother!" Chen Jinhai scolds.
Chen Jianyu puffs and stomps his feet he folds his arms looking at his brother who soon gets distracted looking carefully for the spinach and rivermints.
Seeing that Chen Jinhai was immersed in picking the spinach, Chen Jianyu looks around then smiles as he sees a small turtle in the sand. If he catches it he can keep it as a pet and play when he's bored.
Walking over to taunt the little creature it wasn't long before Chen Jinhai heard a loud noise.
"OWW!!!"
Chen Jinhai quickly stands up looking around for his little brother who was standing by himself holding his finger crying, seeing a small turtle crawling off Chen Jinhai could already tell and his brother looks at him.
"Brother! Brother! It hurts!" The little boy weeps.
"Was it not supposed to?! I told you to stay here! What are you doing over there! You don't listen! Should I feel sorry for you? Well I don't! Pei!"
Chen Jianyu could only cry more at being scolded. Feeling that it was enough spinach and river mint he took his brother's hand marching down the river to their mother.
Who was just finishing catching the second batch of fishes, seeing his children returning Jing Sheng wonders why his youngest was crying.
"What happened?" He inquires.
"We were picking the plants, he was done picking, I told him to stay in sight, he wanted to play, then wander to the river side to provoke a turtle and it bit him" Chen Jinhai said sternly.
Jing Sheng looks at Chen Jianyu, "is that true"
"I only wanted to take it as my pet, picking bushes is no fun. I want to play, mommy it hurts" he sniffles.
Jing Sheng touches his chin, "I will not coddle you, you didn't listen. I will not reward bad behaviour"
"Hm?"
"You disobeyed my request, you told me you can do it but then disobeyed your brother as a consequence you were bitten for straying away" Jing Sheng gently scolds him. "There is a saying that the devil always find work for idle hands and you where being idle"
"But I wanted to play" he whimpers
"You could have played after we were done, now is not the time or place for playing. Even though you are young I need you to understand that we cannot always do the things we want or get what we want, Understand?"
Chen Jianyu rubs his eyes that itches from tears.
"For disobedience, tonight you shall have no fish only spinach and rice"
"W-why?!"
"Because you disobeyed me and went back on your own word" Jing Sheng said.
Jing Sheng didn't like it when children cry, but discipline is a must. Now it's a turtle, next it could be a poisonous animal, Chen Jianyu is too disobedient and is quick to move his own way which isn't good within the situation there.
He understands that kids need to play but this was a river and God forbids but he could drown from just wandering off somewhere.
Not feeling good Chen Jianyu sits one side sulking, Jing Sheng takes out about 15 fishes and parted 15 coppers to pay Le Yan along with the fish.
"It's not-"
"Thank you! I can buy rice with this and some food! The children won't be hungry! Hehe!"
Jing Sheng smiles seeing the sunny expression of Le Yan. It was little money but he cannot deny the gratefulness in the expression he makes. It feels nice being able to help others and seeing a more hopeful side in these desperate times. Small cheap price fish to bright hopeful days, he wants to make it for out these desperate times of war by all means necessary.
Jing Sheng looks at the children then at Le Yan and smiles gently.
