I immediately am caught by surprise at the face looking out at the class.

His hair is a dark black, and his eyes such a blue that I have to keep myself from getting lost in them. He's pretty tall too, or at least appears to be so from the way he holds himself, a permanent smirk waiting to burst free from his lips.

Damn it Tessa, what are you doing to yourself?

I quickly get a hold on myself, and by that I mean I close my mouth before any drool comes out.

I scan the room to see where he's going to sit. Our class is pretty big for public school.

Taken, taken, taken... I count off the seats until...

Oh.

It is by this time that I realize that the only seats open are the ones next to me.

Blood rushes to my face, and I see Will's eye's flitting over the students, contempt pouring out of his eyes. Wait.

Did I just call the new kid Will?

His eyes finally reach my seat, and I see something flicker- just for an instant, it disappears so fast I think I might have imagined it, but no, it was there. Did I see...

Recognition?

No, what am I talking about? I've never met this guy, why would I recognize him? It's not like I once saw him at the grocery store, since he's from England for God's sake.

But it was there. Why?

Will- William- takes his seat, right next to me, and Jem takes the seat next to him. Class continues as usual, until I turn to look at the clock and realize something:

William Herondale is staring at me.

I feel a blush creeping on my face.

"What are you looking at?" I whisper to him.

"You must be daft if you didn't notice me looking at you." He says, a smirk appearing on the side of his mouth.

"Oh shut up, you're the new kid here."

"So?" He replies, staring intently at my lips. I turn away, only to look back and see that he was still looking at me.

"Can you pay attention to the lesson, or does the teacher need a picture of my face on the board to keep you interested?" I snap.

"What's going on here ?" I hear my teacher say, looking directly at me and Will.

"Is this conversation so important you want to share it with the class?" She continues.

I feel heavy embarrassment settling on my chest. "Oh no.. uh.. I just uh-"

"Ms. Gray here was just telling me about the school, since I'm new, I needed a guide, and thought she might help me." William interrupts, flashing the teacher a winning smile. He seems taken aback though, and so am I. How does he know my last name?

She relaxes, and simply asks us to be a little quieter next time.

I turn to him once again. "What was that for?" I say.

"I'm saving you princess, you were dying out there. 'Oh no.. uhh..." he jokingly mocks me.

"You didn't need to, I would have managed perfectly fine without you." I make out as I take my notes.

"Oh yeah, sure you would, as soon as hell freezes over." He replies, copying my actions as he jots down his notes.

"You must be talking of the ninth ring of hell." I inform him.

"What?" He looks up, bewildered.

"The ninth ring of hell- it's frozen, according to Dante's Inferno." I reply.

"You must know nothing of manners then. If a gentleman saves you, no matter how small the matter, you don't prove him wrong- even if he says the sky is purple and made of hedgehogs." He retorts.

"But you are no gentleman," I reply.

"I most certainly am!" He says, pretending to look offended.

I smile, and return to taking notes.

This is gonna be a fun school year.
