My heart is not what it used to be.
Sure, when I was younger, I expected to have a prince come and sweep me off my feet. Then I could live in a castle made of clouds and eat chocolate all day long.
As you would expect, this dream did not last long.
What did last, however, was the constant feeling of dissapointment. O course, I've had my fair share of relationships, but ever since I was thirteen and Thomas Fisher and I snuck out into the pier to have my first kiss, I knew my love life was not going to last. You see, Thomas Fisher kissed me, but then he never spoke to me again.
And then, as a string of boys through middle school and high school came and went, and no one had given me a cloud castle, I took a step back and evaluated my expectations.
After three months and one disastrous relationship, I gave up on boys completely. Surely there have to be SOME perfect guys in the world, but the fact remains that none of them live near me, and if they did, none of them were interested. So when William Herondale called me on Sunday afternoon and asked me for the homeworm, you could understand my surprise at finding a little nest of butterflies swarming my stomach.
"Uh-mm......" I try to struggle out the simple 'We didn't have any homework' without revealing the fact that I am redder than a tomato and have to fight for my breath.
"Tessa...?" Will says, sounding puzzled. "You alright there?"
"There wasn't any homework." I rush this out and take a deep breath to calm myself, not understanding why I feel so jittery.
"Oh, okay." Will says.
....
....
Why isn't he hanging up...?
"Um.. Will? You still there?" I say, getting over my anxiety.
I hear a playful sigh come from the other line "Geez, Tessa, can't a man have at least some time to gather his thoughts before he asks a very pretty lady out to dinner this Thursday?" He answers.
Wait.
Did I hear him wrong? He wants to ask ME out to DINNER?
Did this guy just escape from a mental asylum?
"Tessa?" His voice sounds strained, as if he's nervous I'm gonna say no.
Should I?
I think it over in my head. Well, I could just see where it goes. I hardly know him anyhow, why not get to know him a little?
"Sure." I manage. "Dinner sounds nice."
"Great, I'll pick you up at 8?" Is that relief I hear in his voice?
"Fine by me, see you there." As I hang up the phone, I realize..
Oh no.
I'm gonna have to tell my mom.
She's gonna start fangirling, ph, I just know it.
I edge down the stairway, trying to get a glimpse of my mom. I can't find her, she must be in the kitchen. Great, I'm still red from that phone call, so she knows something will be up.
I walk down the hall into the kitched, where I try nonchalantly to take a seat, looking instead like an awkward robot.
"He..ey.. mom..." I cautiously say to her turned back on the stove.
"I'm going... out... on Thursday." I try to keep a calm in my voice, but a little tremor escapes.
Big. Mistake.
I see my mom turn, clearly hearing my slip-up. She's trying to keep calm herself I see, but I think she already suspects there's something going on.
"And who will you be going out with?" She says, staring straight into my eyes, like a police officer interrogating a suspect.
"Just.. a friend.." I manage. I'm not going to lie to my mom, but, technically I'm not lying.
"And who might this... 'friend..' be?" She questions.
I try to murmur, as low as possible, "Oh, well, um, it might be... Will." I almost whisper.
"Who, what?" She says, in a loud voice. "Speak up now, honey."
Oh, she heard me. My mom may not have the greatest eyesight, but she has the greatest hearing I know.
I sigh, "Will." I say in a defeated tone, immediately covering my ears in expectation of what's going to happen next."
"EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEPPPPPPPPPPPPP!!!!" She squeals.
"Oh my God we have to get you ready! I know the things in your wardrobe, those are NOT gonna work." She rushes.
"Oh, I think Emily still works by 7 over at the nail salon, she'll get you dolled up by 7. That gives us just enough time to order and buy that cute dress I've had my eye on just for this occasion! By 8, you'll be a goddess, my love!"
"Wait wait wait. Mom?" I suspiciously look at her.
I slowly say, "I never told you what time the date was."
Her smile drops into a guilty straight line.
"Oh... I was just... guessing?" She tries.
"Mom?" I drawl out. "What did you do?"
She plays with her fingers for a couple of seconds.
"Well, honey, I may have.. um.. had a little... listen in.. on your conversation...?" She manages.
"WHAT? You tapped into my cell phone?!! Oh my god, mom, that is clearly an invasion of privacy.
"Oh, I know, but I just couldn't bear not to after I saw his caller ID pop up.
I roll my eyes, not really mad, just surprised. I don't really have anything to hide, anyways.
Now let's see how this dinner goes, shall we? I myself can't say I'm not excited though.
The butterflies in my stomach are a lot wilder now, as I think of his mesmerizing blue eyes looking just at me.
Oh, how I adore a nice romance.
