Silence.
The atmosphere is oppressive. Jennie swore she could cut the air with a knife due to the tension between them.
They're currently seated on her couch in the living room, eating breakfast. Both of them didn't know how to act earlier, so Jennie just blurted out the offer of breakfast to ease the awkwardness between them.
She's trying to eat, but she can barely taste anything. She took a casual glimpse to her left to take a peek at Rosie. The blonde isn't doing any better; she hasn't even eaten much, only picking at her meal and putting it back on her plate after sighing.
The blonde must have noticed her staring, so she turned her head towards Jennie, catching her eyes.
Rosie froze, and Jennie observed that her fingers were trembling.
Jennie wanted to look away, but she couldn't. It seems Rosie has her captive.
She was about to break the silence when the blonde beat her to it.
"I'm sorry."
"Huh?" Jennie didn't mean to utter that out loud, but she's confused. She must have misheard.
Rosie shifted in her seat. She placed the plate she was holding on table across them before facing Jennie. Jennie did the same while Rosie closed her eyes as if to collect her thoughts.
"I'm sorry."
"I—" Jennie was at a loss for words. Why is Rosie apologizing? She was the one at fault.
Rosie lowered her head and kept her gaze on her hands as she spoke in response to her prolonged quiet.
"I—I'm genuinely sorry for how I handled things. It wasn't—I didn't mean to raise my voice. I was just saddened by the thought that you lied to me and that maybe everything wasn't true after all." Rosie took another deep breath. "I know it doesn't justify my actions. I—I should've waited to hear your side before assuming things."
Rosie then lifted her gaze to look at Jennie. She looked at Jennie's hands then back to her own open palm above her crossed legs, like she was asking the brunette for permission.
Jennie got the message and nodded.
Rosie took her hands, placing each of them on top of hers before giving them a gentle squeeze.
Both of them sighed in contentment at the contact.
Rosie implored, her eyes full of hope, "Forgive me?"
Jennie is in disbelief about what is happening. Rosie is not only willing to give her another chance, but she also asks for forgiveness! She didn't understand how she earned the presence of this angel, but she is awed.
Rosie muttered a string of sorry after realizing that Jennie's quiet had been misconstrued.
"No." Jennie held her hands tighter.
Jennie dared herself and kissed the back of Rosie's hands. "I'm sorry, my mind is overworking right now so I kind of zoned off." She could hear the blonde's breath stutter.
"You don't have to say sorry. It was entirely my fault."
Rosie abruptly withdrew her hands and stared at Jennie intently before Jennie could continue. the same expression she had given her before when she had shown up drunk.
Right. Rosie was here to ask for forgiveness, but that didn't mean that Rosie had forgiven her. How deluded can she be? The more she looked at Rosie and her intense gaze, the more she panicked. This is her one chance. She needs to apologize right now.
