When Sam finally awoke, he couldn't take his eyes off of the boy. The way his eyes still fluttered softly, even in his sleep. The way his pacifier bobbed in his mouth. Even just the position he was in was enough to make Sam's chest warm.
Sam could've sat there all day if it wasn't for his phone vibrating in his pocket.
He stood and took a step outside of the nursery and shut the door quietly as he pulled his phone out of his pocket.
"Hello?" Sam said, bringing the phone closer to his ear.
"Hey hon, it's Diana. I assume you took Caleb to your house for the rest of the day?"
Shit.
Why didn't he think to inform Caleb's parents about his whereabouts? Is Sam really that dumb? (No, but the author forgot to write that in- Sorry!)
Sam ran a nervous hand down his face, "I am so sorry Mrs. Ward. I completely forgot to tell you where he is. We left the school around lunchtime and it just... seemed to slip my mind"
"It's fine, honey! Nick has a class with him and was wondering where he was. Did something happen? Why did he have to go home so early."
Sam briefly filled her in on the day's events. Mostly skimming off the daily things, just mostly explaining how the fake sub/dom situation is going to work, and how he wasn't completely in headspace.
"Well, I'm glad of all the people you chose, it was Cameron. He's such a sweet boy. Oh- And I understand about taking him to your home, keeping him in a nursery was probably a better idea than keeping him in a normal teenager room." Diana explained.
"I'm glad you see where I'm coming from. Although, I think we could make a few adjustments to Caleb's bedroom to make it a bit more... little Caleb friendly."
"What would you recommend?" She questioned.
"Well, I think it is necessary for him to have a railing on his bed. I've already bought one, and can bring it over to set it up."
"Dang it!" Diana exclaimed, "I should've thought of that! I bet it was tearing you up just thinking about him falling off of the bed! Goodness- I'm sorry Samuel!"
Sam chuckled, "It's really fine ma'am. But, I think other than that, his room just needs a bit more 'baby-proofing'"
"I can do that, I'm so sorry hon! I really should've thought of that!"
The conversation didn't go on much longer than that. However, their goodbyes were cut short by little whines coming from the nursery. Sam quickly finished his goodbye and rushed into the nursery.
He was met with a frustrated-looking little Caleb looking right up at him.
"Daddy?" he rubbed his eyes "Out, p'ease" Caleb tried to look as pitiful as possible.
"Okay, baby" Sam cooed, pulling the baby up into his arms. "Do you wanna try a snack?" he said, still in the sweet voice.
The boy yawned, and quickly shook his head no. Caleb almost fell right back asleep as Sam carried him down the stairs with a comforting rhythm.
Sam was starting to get a little worried at the lack of eating, he knew it was normal for littles to eat less, especially ones in Caleb's age range, but they were still supposed to eat something.
"You're not even a little hungry?" Samuel pushed, "Do you want to try and eat something?"
As the evening wore on, Sam couldn't shake the gnawing worry in the pit of his stomach. Despite his best efforts to coax Caleb into eating, the little showed little interest in food, his appetite seemingly nonexistent. Sam watched with growing concern as Caleb pushed away the snacks he offered, his expression weary and subdued.
