"Could I be the one to propose to you?"
I was so surprised by the question that I frowned. Not that I was surprised that Angie would propose to me but the question and her tone were way too out of place in the middle of a panicked ballroom and tens of unconscious guards.
"Angie, shouldn't we talk about this another time?"
Angie tilted her head, not seeming to understand why I was saying this.
"You don't have to feel pressured. If you don't want to get married we don't have to.
-No, no. I would love to marry you but..."
I pointed at the screaming guests:
"I would prefer to talk about our future in a calmer environment."
Angie finally understood and with one snap of the finger, everyone went silent. People's voices were gone and they continued running in silence. Soon enough everyone disappeared and the only ones left in the ballroom were Saber, Sverre, Alastair, Angie and me. Saber wasn't Angie's friend for nothing. As soon as it was calm, she turned to us with shining eyes:
"So? Are you going to let Astéria propose to you?"
I frowned:
"What?
-It is calm enough now. So? Can I be the flower girl? I would be an amazing flower girl, I promise. I always wanted to be one. Pretty please."
Angie didn't like someone else asking me about our wedding and she glared at Saber. However the latter was way too excited to care:
"You won't regret choosing me. I will make that night magical for the both of you. People will celebrate your love for centuries. So please get married."
I quickly shook my head:
"I didn't say that I didn't want to get married. I just wanted to be the one to propose too.
-Oh... That would be cute too! As long as you get married I don't care."
This was when Alastair snapped:
"That is not important right now! Who cares if they get married? Poehina and Astéria insulted the Emperor. They won't get away with this easily."
Saber rolled her eyes:
"If you count on being this grumpy, you can leave.
-Why aren't you worried? He is the Emperor!"
I shrugged:
"We don't care. Emperor or not, we deserve respect.
-But you can't win against him!"
Alastair seemed so worried that he had trouble breathing.
"Alastair, calm down.
-I can't! You don't understand! He is dangerous!
-We don't care. We will take his throne if necessary. We are going to fight for what we believe in.
-But how? He will always win!"
Angie took a step towards Alastair and looked him straight in the eyes:
"We are not cowards. We will kill him if necessary."
This made him freeze and he looked at Angie for a few seconds before sighing:
"Do whatever you want."
He then turned around and left. Saber seemed happy that he was gone and she was ready to go back to the wedding planning. However she suddenly realized that Sverre was still with us. The latter had been so silent that everyone forgot he even existed. Why did he come in the first place? Was it because of Saber? He never left his room usually.
"Prince Sverre? Aren't you tired? asked Saber.
-No, I am fine. Thank you for your concern. Are you the one tired perhaps? Shall I bring you a chair?"
Saber frowned. She hadn't been expecting him to talk so much it seemed.
"I think you should go home. I will stay with my friends a bit to make sure they are okay.
-As you wish. I will wait for you in the carriage. Take all the time you need.
-No, don't. I will take too long, you should leave before.
-I don't mind waiting."
Saber sighed, forcing herself to calm down:
"Thank you, Prince. I won't take long."
Sverre bowed and wished Angie a happy birthday before leaving. Saber didn't even wait for him to disappear to say:
"Do you need help to take care of the bodies?"
Angie shook her head and the next seconds the bodies were gone. This made Saber whistle:
"Having powers is really practical. Where did they disappear to? Anyway, this is the funniest ball I've ever been to in a long time. It's just as hectic as you, Astéria. Happy birthday."
Seeing me bit my lip made Angie immediately turn to me:
"What's wrong?
-Saber is right. Tonight was very hectic. I am so sorry your birthday turned out like this."
Angie opened wide eyes suddenly:
"Turned out? Wait, does this mean that the ball is over?"
I frowned:
"Everyone left. But don't worry! We could talk and eat the three of us for a few hours if you want. And we could even dance without music if..."
I didn't have time to finish my sentence because the next second Angie lifted me bridal style.
"Angie?
-It's finally over! Time for my reward."
She walked around Saber and told her to leave before practically running to our room. She closed the door behind us and put me down on the bed gently before kneeling down in front of me and staring straight into my eyes:
"I waited. Did I do well?"
I frowned. Was she this excited about the reward? I didn't expect her to be this happy that the ball was a failure. Seeing her so excited made me feel better about the situation and I laughed before rubbing her head:
"You did really well. You can be proud of yourself."
Angie grabbed my hand before rubbing her cheek against it. She closed her eyes and let out a satisfied sigh:
"I finally have you for me alone."
When she opened her eyes next, they were glowing gold. Seeing that color surprised me so much that I flinched. Angie didn't give me time to calm down however and she bent closer to me:
"Can I open my gift now?"
She started tugging at the ribbon around my waist and I started shaking:
"Yes."
