I saw a beam of light as I left the coffee shop where I work. It was small but bright, and I knew whose work it was.
"Hey!" He grinned as I arrived. "Oh, wow! What can I do to deserve the pleasure of your presence, your majesty?"
"What have you done? What the is that?" I shouted at him over the noise of the curious city.
"Awh, no shit today? I get it, people are watching. You're their hero. Although, you're not a good person anyway." He chuckled as I clenched my teeth. What did he mean by that? Not a good person?
"Shut up. You know that's not true. You've held so many people captive! I let them go! Speaking of, what are you doing?" I looked closer. "Did you seriously tip a lighthouse?!" It was surprising, to be honest. I didn't think he had it in him. Especially since-
"Yeah, what about it? Are you angry? Careful, don't shoot vines at me. You might make me throw a fish at you." He says, cutting off my thoughts.
"Just fix it."
"Oooooh! Getting annoyed, hm? How bothering." He smiled slyly.
"Sure, whatever. Just fix it already and leave."
"No, I think I'll leave it." He said as he chuckled and cackled.
"You're so difficult." I sighed, lifting the lighthouse with my vines. Tideful's eyes were humorous, and I could see my reflection clearly in the blue of them. I strain as I attempt to put the lighthouse back in its place. Suddenly, he gasps and falls out of the sky, unconscious. I chuckle and shoot vines at him. I put the lighthouse back, bringing him closer, tying him up in the vines, and carrying him to a nearby rooftop.
I wait a while before I remove my disguise and get into my usual clothes. It's a pale turtleneck paired with a green cardigan, some light brown pants, shades, white beanie. Simple, but I don't care. I love it, and I get to express myself because people like me. I can wear anything, and people know I'm still.. me.
I wait for him to wake up on the other side of the apartment doors, sitting on the stairs.
It takes a little while, but I finally hear him wake up.
"What the-what the fuck? Why- God damnit!" He groaned. After a few minutes, I walk out in a sweatshirt and a long, flowy skirt. Along with, of course, black shoes. I also have a book with me, just one I had stored in my necklace, which is magical. I know, right? It has endless storage, and only I can take it off. I can also lock it so even I can't use it. It's a little hard to unlock it, but it changes its look when I put on my disguise. Hence, nobody gets suspicious as to why I have the same necklace as Evergreen when I'm not, y'know, Evergreen. Anyways. I walk through the doors and look up from my book. I see Riptide and gasp, acting terrified.
"Evergreen?" He said.
"What? I'm–what? I'm not Evergreen. I'm Toby. And you're Riptide!" I stuttered nervously.
"Yeah, I am. Evergreen was just here, you see him?"
"No, I was in my room. I came up here to read."
He chuckled. "Fine, whatever. Can you release me?"
"Will you hurt me?"
"No, I'm too tired for that.."
"Are you sure?" I trembled.
"Yes, just let me go already!"
"Fine, okay!" I said as I cut the vines, letting him go.
"Thanks." He said as he levitated, using the water molecules in the air to create liquid water, carrying him away towards an alley.
I walked into the coffee shop, tired as shit in my uniform.
"You're late," Says Joy, my manager.
"I'm sorry, I didn't sleep well last night."
"Busy watching the fight again?"
"Yeah."
"Where's Raylen?" Raylen's my best friend and co-worker.
"He's at home, probably sleeping. Or sick."
"Okay. Get to work."
"'Kay."
I'm washing the dirty dishes a few hours in when-
Ring-ring!
Someone walks in.
Step, step, step, step, step, step, step.
They walk up to the counter.
"Just a second."
"Toby, it's me." Raylen.
"What are you doing here?" I say sternly.
"Don't worry, I got some rest. What did you tell Joy?"
"That you were sick at home, sleeping," I mumbled loud enough for him to hear.
"Ugh." He groans. "I'll go talk to her."
"Careful, she's grouchy today. Probably got annoyed since Tide lost so easily last night. I wonder what happened with him."
"Same. Like, I thought he was more powerful or something."
A few minutes later, he came out looking less irritated than before.
"How'd it go?" I asked.
"It went okay, she was less annoyed than I imagined."
"That's good. Now, come and help me run the shop."
"Yeah, yeah."
"You've been gone for three hours, so I'm gonna sit back and do barely any work while you hustle your ass off!" I joked.
"Okay, calm down." He smiled. I can't help myself but smile, too.
"Hey, sing your favorite song for me again." I giggle.
"Come on, you know I don't know the words." He sighs.
"I know!"
