Mika Miyamura was one of the angels held in high regard. With her docile appearance and polite personality, she was one of the few contenders for the throne of her father, Daisuke Miyamura. From the outside, all was well. Mika passed all her tests with flying colors and her parents were truly proud after the spectacle that was producing twelve children and no male heirs to the throne. Her father had declared that she was the one and only gem of the Miyamura family, and her mother had nodded in agreement, eyes shining when they landed on the princess - like fourteen-year-old Mika.

But one day, Mika had learned that life wasn't to be taken so easily. At least, not when her mother was still capable of giving birth.

"It's a boy!"

"Good gracious, how handsome!"

"Welcome to the world, Kaito Miyamura."

Back then, Mika hadn't been aware that everything of her life; from being trained to hold the crown to her parents' admiration, was soon to disappear.

And so, foolishly, as she stared at her brother, skin still pink and eyes still blue, she had given him her signature gummy smile, to which he had reciprocated with one of his own; a family gene. Mika had missed the way in which his eyes had turned red: a sign of impending darkness.

She had paid for it, with her family, with her friends, with her crown and with her own life. Because Kaito wasn't any ordinary angel. He was a Dark Angel.

Nineteen-year-old Mika hadn't known what to expect as she had walked into her brother's room, arms filled with freshly laundered clothes for her Kaito's usage, but it certainly wasn't the shell of him; blood oozing from the neck and hand clutched around a bottle filled with green liquid.

Before she could react, or run, or do anything really, her mother had entered the room after her, and her shriek of pain had roused the whole household. Chained to the wall by her hands, Mika had to listen while her mother loudly proclaimed that she had killed her one and only son. The woman she had loved all her life, now stood with angry tears rushing down her face, accusing her daughter of murder. Mika was helpless.

There were several punishments for people who sinned in Heaven, and  Aika Miyamura handpicked the worst of them for her daughter: her banishment from Heaven. The guards dragged her to the Gates, not missing how Mika hadn't protested at all, but simply looked meek and small. Owing it to her guilt, the guards disposed of her heavenly body without qualms, and soon, Mina Myoui was reborn in Texas to her Japanese family, the Myouis - a family richer by far than the ordinary people that littered the streets below the hospital.

No one ever questioned how she was able to remember the full alphabet at the age of one. It was taken for granted, along with her ever-perfect grades and clear voice. Her grandmother doted on her, as her parents were simply not present to do so. Sometimes, Mina had bad nightmares, and her grandmother soothed her with jasmine tea, completely missing the murmured words of "Kaito", "Reborn", and "Unfair" that were forever present during Mina's nightmares. Subsequently, when Mina had her first ever anxiety attack at the age of eight, her parents decided to move back to Japan, as they had more familial relations there to take care of her.

And now they were moving back.

"Dad! I won't go!" yelled a fourteen-year old Mina from the backseat of their Porsche, kicking her legs under the driver's seat to emphasize her point, hands clutching her sleek black phone. "Momo and Sana are with me here, and besides, can't I just get higher education in Japan?"

"Mina," replied her father condescendingly, shutting down the teenager's complaints. "It's already decided - we've applied to the new school and everything. Listen to sense for once; it's an excellent opportunity for your education."

"Still, what's in it for me?" demanded Mina, eyebrows raised.

"If you go, we'll let you quit ballet."

Mina's breath hitched. Quit ballet? Finally? After years of pushing and whining, was she allowed to let go? Just like that? It was almost too good to be true.

But Sana and Momo...

"Only if Momo and Sana come with me," she finalized, ignoring her father's low groan.

"Darling," she rolled her eyes, "You can't possibly expect your friends' families to simply let go of their lives back in Japan, just to accompany you to America!"

"Then why are you expecting me to?"

Her father was at a loss for words. Satisfied, Mina delivered one last blow through the phone, echoing in his silence.

"I don't care how you do it, but they'd better be with me."

She hung up and sighed, asking the driver to take her to Sana's house instead.  She wasn't going to some common American high school without her fellow immortals with her. Damn it, she'd do ballet forever if it meant being with Sana and Momo. Mina wasn't going to let go quite so easily.

"Icarus High, here I come."
