Chaeyoung wouldn't have known what to expect.

It was her first day of high school, after all. The freshman was rather muddled, as her guide (Kim?) Dahyun had vanished into the sea of students, leaving her behind to navigate her way to class. Scratching her head, she fixed the bag on her shoulders and looked around. Surely, her class was somewhere.

She wasn't the only one in difficulty, however. That quiet looking Taiwanese girl from across the hall had spent the last five minutes walking in a loop, entering one door and exiting from another, only to find herself in the same place yet again. Deciding that she'd rather be lost with company than without, Chaeyoung made her way to her, pushing through the horde of students walking in different directions. They made eye-contact when she was within talking distance.

"Uh... hi."

The girl simply stared at her.

"Um... what's your name?"

More staring. Chaeyoung suddenly realized that the girl might not be able to speak their language - she was clearly a foreign student. Maybe her parents hadn't taught her English, like Chaeyoung's had? Fighting back the bright red blush that suddenly threatened to appear on her cheeks, she pulled out her phone, and when she was halfway through typing out her message on the translator app, the girl blurted out, "It's Chou Tzuyu. And yours?"

Chaeyoung did a double-take. The silence that followed after she stuffed her phone into her pocket spoke volumes.

But it wasn't awkward.

A giggle multiplied into several. Smiles grew wider and wider. Chaeyoung realized just a few seconds later that she was laughing openly; eyes crinkled and mouth lopsided. Tzuyu laughed at her, and looking at her beauty, Chaeyoung couldn't find it in her heart to feel insulted. Smiling sheepishly, she shook hands with the other girl and replied, "Son Chaeyoung. A lost transferee."

Tzuyu grinned. "That makes two of us, then."

With Tzuyu by her side, it wasn't half as hard as being alone. While the other girl wasn't nearly as talkative like Dahyun, Chaeyoung appreciated her comfortable silence. When she did talk, it was always some sort of sarcastic remark about that teacher's stupid hat that had Chaeyoung in stitches. She was really beginning to like the girl.

"Look at you," her mom would've said, "Making a friend already."

Chaeyoung's mood darkened considerably after that. Would've said.

Because her mom wasn't around to say the real thing anymore, was she?

"We're here?" broke in Tzuyu with a confused voice, shaking Chaeyoung out of her reverie. "That's it? Really?"

Chaeyoung looked around. Their classroom looked rather like a ghost town.

"No, Tzuyu, I think this one is under temporary renovation."

Tzuyu snorted. "They've probably been saying that for the past five years."

Snickering, the duo left the classroom.

Eventually, after a couple more ghost towns, Chaeyoung and Tzuyu had managed to find their classroom. The teacher looked rather mad, but as it was technically their first day, she couldn't do much other than the usual "don't be late again" and a scowl in their direction, which didn't really mean much to Chaeyoung. Exchanging secretive looks, they sat down and the bell rang immediately afterwards.

Trying not to laugh (Tzuyu had checked her timetable before entering) they ran off to the locker rooms for P.E. Chaeyoung felt nothing but the feeling of elation in her veins. On her first day she had found her first friend, and she had never been more happy. During lunch, Dahyun had also joined them, after apologizing for leaving Chaeyoung, and the two had welcomed her warm personality and funny manner of speaking.
