“Sometimes, I wish the stars would stop floating and one would fall on me.” I thought while I stared at the ceiling “So then when I die I can say ‘I got crushed by a star!’ and everyone would laugh.” I try to make out the time on the clock and begin to panic “Crap! I’m gonna get in trouble!” I jumped up and got dressed in my new morning clothes that the doctors gave me. Just as I sat down and began to calm down, my collar buzzed, “Oh no! It's test day!” I thought. I ran over to my dresser and got dressed again, but this time into my testing clothes. I waited for the guards to lead me to the chamber. I sat down and caught my breath as I heard the large metal door slowly open, “Subject 14.” said one of the guards. I bowed down “Yes Sir?” I answered in a panic. “Mr. Archer needs your presence.” I could feel a drop of sweat drip off my nose as I lifted my head up “Yes sir.”
I walked down the white hallway and my eyes opened wide. “Where was everybody? Usually the lunch room is packed.” There were so many empty tables that it sent shivers down my spine. As we got closer to the room, I could feel my stomach turning and twisting. The guards open the door and the cold but calming air hits my face. I’m met with a sickening smile “Hello my child.”
I shivered as he smiled without a care in the world. “Hello sir…” he looked disappointed “You can still call me father! I’m not a stranger!” he smiled cheerfully. As he turned around to the guards, his smile dropped and he glared at them “Leave. You are scaring him.” The guards bowed down and left the room. He looked at me and smiled again. He bent down to my height and opened his arms “Don’t be shy! Hug your father, I won’t hurt you!” I carefully walked over to him and he embraced me tightly. I could feel his weirdly plastic like coat rub against my skin. I always wondered how he didn’t get itchy skin. After he let me go he walked over to his desk and grabbed a syringe with a lavender liquid. He turned around and bent down to my level again, “Don’t worry, this will numb all pain so you don’t squirm around!” I began to shake as my body moved without warning. It felt like I was a puppet and he was controlling the strings. He hugged me again as he stuck me in the back of the neck with the needle. He hugged me tightly so I couldn’t move. He let go of me and smiled again “See? It wasn’t that bad!” I nodded slightly. He seemed slightly annoyed that I wouldn’t talk to him but still smiled. “He’s alway so disappointed when I don’t talk. Why is he acting so weird?” I thought to myself. He grabbed my hand softly “Well come on! It’s your turn for room D4!”As soon as he said D4, the memories of that room flooded my memory like a gallon of water being poured into a small cup. All of the doctors with their stupid notebooks, watching me in pain. He held my hand as we walked down the hall. “Don’t worry my child, the medicine will numb most of the pain!” He said it like it was a happy thing. I didn’t like how he sounded like he was going to laugh at my fear. As we walked past the lunch room again my eyes widened again. “Why are there only seven tables filled?! Usually there's over 12 at least!” I thought fearfully. He must have realized my shock because he chuckled quietly “Don’t worry my child, most of the children were tired after testing so they are in their rooms or in the play zones.” I looked up at him and he seemed to enjoy that I wasn’t ignoring him anymore. I was shocked when he gave a genuine smile and picked me up. He laughed at my face “What? Do you think I’m such a monster that I wouldn’t pick up my own son?” I thought about answering him when he began to say “I know that you don’t understand this yet but you are more than a test subject to me and the other scientists.” I tilted my head in confusion and he smiled again “my point stands clear.” he said calmly. He began to walk again and stopped at the room. He smiled cheerfully as held me closer. “Don’t worry my child, we’re just working on existing abilities for you.” My body unfroze but I kept my grip tight to his paper like coat. I let him keep on carrying me into room D4.
I could feel the other scientists staring and whispering but Mr. Archer didn’t seem to mind. He sat me down in the white padded room and bent down to my height, “What do you want to practice?” I didn’t want to answer but I spoke anyway “Telekinesis.” I said quietly. He walked over to the other scientists and told them what I wanted to do. The other scientists handed him an object, it was a hand-size rock. Mr. Archer showed me the rock and said “Do you think you can lift this rock?” I nodded and focused my brain on the rock, causing the rock to float. Mr. Archer seemed impressed but also intrigued by my ease to lift the rock. Usually it is hard for me to use telekinesis. The bright light and white room always hurt my eyes and made it hard to focus. He walked over to the scientists and grabbed bigger objects. There was a ball, a book and a chair. He walked over to me and placed them on the ground. I focused really hard and all of the objects lifted off the ground then hit the floor. Mr. Archer smiled and took off his lab coat. He fixed his green turtle neck and looked down at me. “Can you make me float?” he asks while the other scientists start whispering again. I think for a moment, “Yes.” I said calmly. For some reason he smiled at my voice. I looked up at him and he smiled again. I lift up my hand and apply a small amount of pressure. He quickly levitates off the ground but I keep my hand out so he won’t fall. He started laughing as I levitated his coat back on. He walked up to me and hugged me tightly. As soon as he hugged me, pain rushed to my head and my eyes felt like they had been scooped out with a spoon. “Sir…” I said in a daze, “Yes 14? What is it?” He looked down in concern.“Head… fire. Pain.” I felt my eyes burning and I held him tighter. My tail went limp and I felt my ears sink down. “14?! Someone check vitals!” My nose began to bleed deep red blood onto his plastic like white coat. “Level 5! Archer, leave the testing chamber!” I began to panic, “No… not that again… I thought I did good. I did what they wanted… I’m sorry, don’t leave…” Mr. Archer began to actually seem worried. My head was spinning terribly and it felt like my body was burning but I couldn’t go back. They would yell at Mr. Archer and make him scared they would get rid of me. “Listen to them Johnson! He’s pushing past limits because of D4, you can’t leave him here!” One of the doctors he called Johnson, pulled Mr. Archer out of my reach while the other grabbed my hand and held down my leg as they pulled out a blue-green syringe. “He’s a kid! I can understand the other kids but he’s the first one to survive! You can’t hurt him!” Mr. Archer lunged at me as the last drop of the liquid dripped into my vein and the burning began to feel like hell. I held my hands out to Mr. Archer as everything became blurry. “14! Stay awake, please!” I looked at Mr. Archer. He looked on the verge of tears. I whispered the only words that came to my mind, “I’m sorry sir.I woke up in Mr.Archer’s office and I held my head “God this hurts a lot…” I thought to myself “I’m alone…” I thought. I walked over to a file cabinet and opened a drawer with the numbers 14 in big bold letters. I grabbed the files and began to read them
“project 14 age:7 species: halfing (half human & dark elf) powers: telekinesis, healing, and shadow manipulation
danger level
(unprovoked): 3 [safe to some] danger level (provoked): 8 [dangerous]“ I only have telekinesis and healing, why would they lie in my file?” I heard footsteps so I hid the files in my bag and climbed onto the couch. Mr.Archer walked inside of the room and sat next to me. For a second I stared at his terrified gaze. He looked horrified and I could feel the tears in his voice when he spoke, “What did I do? What can I do to fix this!?” He said in a sad, angry tone. I opened my eyes slowly and rubbed my eyes “Mr. Archer?” I asked him. He jolted and hugged me tightly. I was shocked that he was so quick to jump on me. I hugged back but he wouldn’t let go. He picked me up and he walked out of the office.
