Wednesday had tried to ignore what had happened between her and Enid on the first night of the new school year, also because she didn't know how to explain it and she had no intention of listening explanations from Thing, that had witnessed the scene and had tried, for all the following hours, in vain, to make Wednesday "hear" him, hinting about feelings and other delusional rubbish that Wednesday had decided she would have ignored for all her ephemeral earthly life.
If I don't see the problem, the problem doesn't exist, easy.
The first day of lessons had gone smoothly, Enid seemed to have returned terribly normal and chaotic.
The same dynamic occurred on the second day.
Wednesday passed the time between lessons and her novel, occasionally forcing herself to relate to her classmates, especially Xavier, who insisted on having breakfast with her every morning, using as bait the fact that he would have reported all the rumors and doubts that revolved around the new Headmaster of the school, Dond Parrols, a "non-normal" ex-cop that no one had ever heard about. He seemed to appear out of nowhere.
Enid, as mentioned, was back to normal, but she seemed to have been trying to ignore Wednesday as much as possible. The two of them only managed to see each other in the evening, if not hastily in class, just before going to sleep and in those circumstances Enid was always frighteningly cheerful and provoked Wednesday with her usual eccentric ways, as if nothing had happened.
But that was all.
The blonde, for the first time, didn't seem willing to speak openly to Wednesday about what had happened, despite the fact that she always talked about whatever was whirling in that little colored head.
She didn't want to talk about feelings and Wednesday certainly wouldn't have started that speech.
Maybe Enid wanted to ignore them too?
And since when had she become so avoidant?
The third day of the week seemed to start out just like the others, monotonous.
Wednesday found herself looking at the coffee grounds in her cup, trying to figure out what macabre end her future held, but that day it seemed incomprehensible.
-Did you hear what I just said?-
Xavier, who was having breakfast in front of her, roused her from her thoughts.
-I'm thinking about how it is possible that none of us have found any information confirmed by serious data on the Headmaster.- She lied.
But it was partly true. It was rumored that the principal was discharged from the police in the city for being found with his hands in some shady dealings, but nothing confirmed that information.
Some of the most curious students said that they had gone to town to ask around about the man, but no one seemed to know him, not even among his former colleagues and they always sent away the curious.
-The strange thing is that the Headmaster has understood that everyone is asking questions about him and he seems to be pleased. He doesn't care what people say about him. -
This way of being might have pleased Wednesday, who didn't answer to Xavier and just looked again at the bottom of her cup.
Why didn't she see anything?
Fate seemed to have forsaken her, like her visions.
-I see you more absent than usual, is something wrong?- The boy asked her, trying to drown out the voices of other kids sitting at the table next to them, at the bar, who were too excited for Wednesday's tastes.
