As the gunshot echoed around us, we bolted in different directions. I ran through the woods until I tripped over a branch. I tried to grab onto a bush on the way down, but I failed miserably. I landed head first on the cold gravel.
"Ouch, that's going to leave a mark," I muttered to myself.
Two shadow figures caught my attention, and I slowly crouched up, peeping through the leaves. A young man with vibrant ginger hair wearing a faded white plaid shirt, embracing an older-looking woman with her hair tied up into a messy bun. She was wearing a white blouse and blue jeans, and they were sitting on a red picnic blanket.
They seemed to be startled and heard me falling. "Who's there?!" said the woman as she rested her small hand on the boy's chest.
"I think we need to go and investigate," the man said confidently. He slowly looked in my direction, and my eyes widened.
Archie?! As in my brother Archie!
We've never met before, nor he knows who I am. Mary only showed me photographs."No! Are you crazy?! This was a bad idea, Archie. We can't be seen together," the woman quickly grabbed her belongings and got up.
"Whoa, whoa, Geraldine!" Archie grabbed her wrist and looked at her with pleading eyes.
"No," Geraldine held her jacket close to her chest and shook her head. "It's Miss Grundy now. We never speak of this, and it never happened."
As they bickered to themselves, I quickly made a dash out of there before I was seen.
After a quick run, I finally made it to my destination, Pops. A small blue diner with a fancy red neon sign and a few cars parked outside. I brushed off most of the dirt from my jacket and headed inside.
The small bell rang above the door as I walked up to the counter. As I scanned the room, waiting patiently for my turn to be served, I noticed that I had grabbed everybody's attention and the room had gone silent. You could hear a pin drop. I gave a polite smile and a nod.
The people in the booth nearest to the door were whispering to one another. A girl with black short hair and eyes wearing clothes that looked like they were far out of my budget was sitting with another girl next to her.
The dress style of the other girl was more preppy, and her hair was tied up into a high ponytail as she held a strawberry milkshake. She was sitting opposite a boy wearing a grey beanie, black hair and hazel eyes, a jacket and a basic grey top, typing away on his computer and looking at me from head to toe.
"Who the hell is she? Her outfit is crying for help. And the mud... that's not how you treat a jacket," whispered the posh girl, raising her eyebrows.
"Beats me. I've never seen her around here before," said the preppy girl, shrugging her shoulders while slowly leaning a bit more in my direction.
"Really, Veronica? A mystery girl pops up, and you're more bothered about a broken zipper and a few smudges of mud." Said the beanie guy.
Veronica let out a sigh and rested her left arm on top of the other. "It's sketchy, Jughead," she said.
As I tuned into their conversation, I felt a small tap on my shoulder. "Excuse me, miss," the waiter said.
I hummed and turned towards the waiter. "Yes?"
"What would you like to order?" he asked, sliding me a note across the countertop.
I glanced at the menu and replied, "Chocolate milkshake with whipped cream, please, Pops."
Pops nodded and started making the milkshake. I read the note, folded it up, and put it into my pocket while sliding across the box the man gave me earlier. I walked past the gossip group and sat in the booth behind them, minding my own business.
Placing the broken zipper onto the table, I looked up and met Jughead's eyes. His eyes were slightly narrowed, judging my every move. I gave him a look.
Even though his looks could kill, he was a handsome guy. I wondered what he was typing on his laptop. A few seconds later, Pops brought my milkshake."Here you go, Amy," he said with a smile, placing it next to my left hand. I nodded to thank him.
As my name was obnoxiously slipped out by Pops, I saw Veronica's head slightly turn, earwigging into the conversation. I took a sip of my milkshake, moved to the other seat, and rested my arm on the back of their seat.
"You know, it's rude to listen in on people's conversations," I said in a cocky tone, tilting my head.
"Well, in a small town like this, it's off-putting to just turn up like you've been in a fight," she replied while gesturing to my outfit.
"For your information, I got accidentally knocked over by a jogger," I raised a brow, looking at her up and down.
"Could be believable, but Pops doesn't hand out secret love letters to anyone," said Jughead while closing his laptop.
"Aww, isn't this adorable, my own Scooby gang," I chuckled while finishing the rest of my drink.
The preppy girl scoffed. "Just forget it, guys."
I smirk at Jughead while sipping on my straw, turning around in my seat. I lay out five dollars on the table along with the empty glass, carefully stand up, and head out of Pops.
As I departed, several bikers were parked just near the street.
Crap, just what I needed.
From the corner of my eye, the Scooby gang left a few seconds after me; I could see Blondie's ponytail sticking up behind a car's bonnet.
"Did you do the deed?" says a woman putting her hands into the jeans pockets while standing in a slant.
"You know I did, Penny. Why else would I be at Pops?" I replied.
"I don't know, cursing around on your holiday," she says snarkily, curling up her nose.
Her biker friends started forming a circle around me, making sure I won't bolt during our conversation. "It's just for a few days while she visits Dad," I smiled.
"Would be a shame if they knew what kind of business you've gotten yourself into," Penny says, crossing her arms.
"You wouldn't dare!" I reply, moving closer towards Penny.
"Or what?" Before Penny could finish her sentence, three cop cars came zooming past us, heading towards the Sweetwater River. She pointed her finger at me with a glare and quickly fled the scene with the rest of the bikers.
My whole body ached as soon as I relaxed. I turned as I saw the gang slowly standing up, glancing at the cop cars, then back towards me.
And this is how my story in Riverdale comes to a whole different turn than I planned. A hidden target stapled onto my back.
