empty apologies

jisung sat impatiently in the parking lot of mari's apartment complex. tapping his foot as he anxiously leaned against chan's car, waiting on mari and hongjoong to arrive. finally after what felt like ages, hongjoong's red car comes into his view.

he felt stuck as he watched hongjoong get out, not missing the glare he sends him as he hurries over to mari's side to open the door for her. she climbs out and jisung can feel his heart shatter at her tear-stained face. he never wanted to be the cause of her tears.

as she made eye contact with him, walking towards him with hongjoong protectively walking behind her, she felt herself wanting to cry more. unable to forget the way he discarded her without a second thought.

however the two boys were having a glaring contest. jisung wasn't blind, and he knew hongjoong had a thing for mari. so just as it was the first time they met, they always seemed to be having silent competitions when they were around each other. after what felt like an eternity, the pair had finally arrived to chan's car.

"baby..." jisung calls. sneering once hongjoong steps in between the pair.

"just give her her stuff." he says sternly to jisung.

"it's okay, hongjoong." mari places her hand on his shoulder, the boy instantly melting under her touch. he reluctantly moves to the side. "let's go, jisung." she says, showing no emotion. but he quickly grabs her bags from chan's car, motioning that it was okay for him to leave. mari does the same to hongjoong, nodding as he demanded her to text him if she needed anything. jisung subconsciously rolled his eyes.

she tries to grab her bags from the boy, but he denies, carrying them himself. not forgetting to send a final glare to hongjoong as he got in his car and left.

"i really am sorry." he says, following mari to the elevator. she stays silent, causing him to feel even guiltier somehow. they didn't do the silent treatment, they always wanted to talk it out. so her silence was extremely unnerving. but mari truly didn't know what to say. she was hurt.

jisung follows her into her apartment like a lost puppy. veins flowing with guilt. so many words jumbling around his brain, but not exactly knowing what to say to her. he wanted her to say something, anything.

"i just don't understand." mari finally speaks up, causing jisung's heart to skip a beat.

"i know... i didn't think." he admits to acting on the first thing that came to his head. admittedly it was dumb. "i just... they couldn't see you getting in the same car as me." he adds.

"you think i didn't know that? i'm not an idiot, jisung." she snaps.

"no— i know... i just-"

"i've been sneaking around with you for years, i had no plans of getting in that car with you." she tells him. she was actually planning on standing on the sidewalk, acting as if she were looking for her ride as jisung and chan drove off. of course, planning on them coming back around to get her once the coast was clear.

"i was just... worried... i panicked." he frowns, at a loss for words. he didn't know what he could say to make it better.

"you didn't even glance as that security guard man-handled me. you just left." her voice breaks at the end of the sentence. more tears falling. jisung steps forward and wraps her in his arms, frowning even more when she doesn't hug him back.

"i know... i was an idiot. how can i make it up to you?" he gives up on trying to excuse himself, placing a kiss on the top of her head.

"i don't know jisung... you made me look like fool in front of tons of people. they thought i was some creepy stalker." she pouts at the thought, hoping that dispatch hadn't taken her photo, or any photos in general of the scene.

"if anything like that comes out, i'll personally make sure it gets taken down." he says sternly.

"how? you can't defend me after you called me out like that. people will suspect something." she pulls away from his grip around her. jisung stutters.

"i... i'll figure something out..." he trails off, not believing his own words. mari rolls her eyes.

"just go." she turns away from him. tears of his own threatening to spill from his eyes at her words.

"baby... don't..." he pleads. "let's talk this out."

"i have nothing more to say to you. and i don't want to hear anymore excuses. go." she says again, looking at him over her shoulder.

"mari, come on." he reaches out for her hand but she backs away.

"i'm not gonna say it again." she refuses to meet his gaze. knowing his saddened eyes will cause her to give him lenience that he doesn't deserve. jisung sighs, feeling unable to move. leaving was the last thing he wanted to do. part of him was scared she would call hongjoong. he knew she would never cheat on him, but the thought of her finding comfort in him made jisung feel sick. "jisung please..." her voice coming out as a strangled whine. making his heart break for the umpteenth time today.

"o-okay..." he reluctantly agrees, hearing in her voice how she truly wanted him to go. if it would help, he would do it. "i love you." he says, finding it impossible to leave her without saying it. he'd never missed an opportunity to tell her, so he certainly wouldn't miss it even when they were having a conflict.

mari of course loved him. so no matter how mad she was, she couldn't not say it back. she never wanted to leave him without saying it, they were very meticulous about it. so even though her heart was breaking, she said it back.

"i love you..." jisung smiles at her words. feeling comfort in knowing that their feelings haven't changed, but of course he was still worried. they had never had this big of an issue, even in their years of friendship. he would do anything to make sure she forgives him. hell, he would figure out how to rewind time if it came down to it.

without another word, jisung leaves her apartment. mari instantly falling to her knees as the door closes. jisung hears the thud of her falling to the floor, and it took everything in him to not go back in and hug her until she physically couldn't be mad at him. but he knew that's not what she wanted. he knew it's not what she needed.

he had to force himself to walk away, hearing her muffled sobs from behind the door. if he stayed any longer he wouldn't have been able to leave. unfortunately for him, his schedule was going to start picking up again soon. he desperately wanted to fix this before his free time cut down immensely.

so as mari breaks down on her living room floor, sobbing relentlessly remembering the way everyone looked at her like she was a freak. the way the security guard handled her as if she were a criminal. jisung walked to his shared apartment with his group mates. desperate to come up with a way to make it up to her.

only, as he scrolled through his phone, he realized making it up to her was about to be a thousand times harder. every other post on his socials was something he never wanted to see. mari's panicked face as the security guard pulled her away, his back completely turned to her.

stalker fan gets kicked out of airport after being caught trying to follow stray kids' han!

"fuck me..." he groans. there had already been several different posts made, each of them being shared thousands of times. harsh comments from fans, people trying to figure out who she is. he was doomed.
