Before you knew it, Gwen Stacy fit herself right in. She became well known amongst the spider people, mostly because she's supposed to be the supporting character in many other dimensions.
"Gwen, hey!" A spider waved at her as you walked together.
"Hey, Gwen." And another.
And another, "'Sup Gwen!"
"My student is very popular, I see." You tease, nudging her shoulder.
She laughs sheepishly, "Yeah, well, Hobie likes to gather large groups y'know? And I'm always with him."
This piques your interest, "What is going on between you and Hobie? Is anything serious yet?
Her cheeks grow pink, "Oh, it's nothing like that, (y/n). We're just friends . . . Besides . . ." She trails off as the two of you arrive at the cafeteria and wait in line for the meal.
"Besides . . . ?" You inquire, leaning into her.
"Well, you know my friend--Miles." She scratches the back of her head.
Your expression drops, "Gwen. I know you two are close, but you cannot see him."
"Oh, c'mon. Even if I find an anomaly in his dimension, I'm sure it won't be too terrible to just . . . say hi?"
You shake your head, crossing your arms. "No. As small as that is, he will find out eventually about our association. And once he does, he will do anything to be a part of it. I have heard everything about him, trust me."
"I know . . ." She sighs, dropping her head.
"And if he ever finds out his major canon event, it will be big trouble." You pick up silver plates for the two of you. "You do tend to have a big mouth."
"Even if I see him, I won't tell him everything." Gwen rolls her eyes, taking the plate from you.
You sigh, clicking your tongue, "I will hold you to it, Gwen. But I am serious. I can only protect you from Miguel for so long."
"Ugh, that Grumpster always has something to say to me." She groans, picking up silverware and sticking it into her food.
You let out a small laugh, "He's just being cautious. He wants to keep you and Hobie under his control as best he can."
"I'm almost an adult. Hobie is already one, too. But Miguel treats us like kids!" She leads you over to a table.
You give her a sympathetic look, "I know. But it is better that I am always there to shoo him away, yes?"
She laughs, smiling at you, "You're right about that."
You smile back at her, taking a seat across from hers. It was nice that you and Gwen have gotten along despite being mentors and students. Sure, you've had to scold her here and there. Or there would be times when you two would have disagreements, but thankfully it only brought you closer to each other.
"By the way, Hobie had this really cool idea once-" She grins at you, getting into her story.
You saw Gabriella telling one of her soccer stories in front of you. A sad smile graced your lips as you drowned out Gwen's speaking, reminiscing the fun memories with Gabriella. Thinking back to your dear child, it stung--but it wasn't excruciating pain like it was months ago. It was bearable, tolerable. You couldn't say the same for Miguel, though.
"(Y/n)? Are you listening to me?" Gwen leans across the table to you, scooping a spoonful of your yogurt.
You snapped out of your trance, "Oh, I am so sorry, Gwen. I did not mean to space out like that."
