Ponyboy crawled out from under his blankets. Tears streaking down his face as Soda gently rubbed the boys back. Pony didn't like being vulnerable. He hated when his brothers were worried about him. He slowly stopped crying and stared at Soda. Soda asked if it was the same nightmare and he nodded. Soda reminded him it wasn't real and that the both of them should get ready for school and work.
Pony went downstairs to meet Steve Randle, Soda's best friend in the whole world. Pony used to think the two would get married when they grew up, but then Soda started going out with Sandy. Don't get him wrong he thought Sandy was ok. Though she always referred to his muteness as a disability. Instead of just a challenge.
The car ride was quiet. Pony stared out the window and caught himself in the reflection. His dyed blonde hair glowing brightly in the sun. He had dyed it as a birthday gift. It made him look a lot more like his mom and it made him happy.
They pulled up in front of the school and Soda gave him the usual 'if someone messes with you' talk. Pony slipped his mask over his ears. Soda sighed. He didn't get why the school made Pony wear that mask. It singled him out from the other kids.
