TW: mentions of starvation
"How was your meeting?" Na-rae asks on the phone. Yeonjun complained how infuriating Taehyun was. "He's so two-faced. I mean c'mon if you're going to hate someone, shouldn't you at least try being discreet about it?" He growled in frustration. Na-rae didn't know how to respond to that.
Instead she asked something else, "Are you at home already?"
"No, I got a taxi. You think I wanted to walk in the rain?" His temper is showing.
"A simple 'no' was good enough, thanks."
She could hear the rain from the other line, it must be pouring outside. "Oh right, my mom invited you and your family for dinner tonight. It's at our house." Yeonjun said. They both live in the same neighborhood, so there wouldn't be any reason to be late. There are some advantages living by your best friend.
One: Free food 90% of the time. Two: You know where to go when you're bored.
But, Na-rae was startled by the invite. She doesn't remember the last time they got invited as a whole family. The last time was Christmas, and it was the most memorable time for her. Both of their families allowed them to drink, terrible idea. Na-rae doesn't remember much, but being at his house made her feel happier.
"Oh really? Wait, why though?" She asks. Yeonjun didn't respond but she could hear rustling. She assumed he made it home already. Watch, he's going to hang up on me.
"I'll call you back." He hung up.
"Knew it." Na-rae got out of bed and went downstairs. She almost slipped on a stair step. Her dad was in the living room watching TV, and her mom was cleaning the dining table. She poorly puts on her worn out shoes and finds an umbrella to save her from the rain. "Na-rae you know we're going to-" her mom starts.
"Yeonjun's house? Yeah, I'll be back hold on!" She didn't wait for her mom to respond, and slammed the door shut. "Na-rae!" Her mom walks to window and pushes the curtain open. She sees her going to Yeonjun's house for the third time this week. It's only Tuesday.
"Where is she going?" Na-rae's dad said. Her mom pulled the curtain back to place, "His house again. Why is she always going there?"
She opens her umbrella and runs before Yeonjun goes inside his house. She sees him from a distance, he just closed the taxi door. "Yeonjun!" She yells. The bottom of her pajama pants are soaked from the rain, and the wind gives her goosebumps. Yeonjun looks back and she could see his jacket hood getting soaked. "Na-rae?"
She looked both ways before crossing the street. When the coast is clear she runs over to him. Yeonjun had worried eyes on his face. "Why are you here? Did something happen at home?" She shook her head as she was trying to catch her breath. She actually doesn't know why she's here right now. She could've texted him why they're having dinner.
"I don't know, it seems to be a habit." she gulps, still trying to pace herself back up. "You should stop hanging up like that, I was asking you a question."
Yeonjun scratches his head. "That's also a habit. But to answer your question, I don't know either. My mom just planned it and told me to tell you."
"Really?" He nods and looks around him. "Okay, I'm gonna go back now. My mom is going to drag me back if I don't come back soon."
Yeonjun wanted to speak and tell her to stay, but he knew that she would take it the wrong way. He refrained himself from saying that.
He nodded, "I'll see you tonight." He watched her walk away with an umbrella barely covering her left shoulder.
