Daya was awoken the next morning by quick knocking on the front door. She groaned, pouting at the sound when she opened her eyes. There was only one person who'd do that. Because they were the only one who could get away with it.
When Daya finally pulled herself out of the comfort of her bed, she opened the door to find Maddy standing there.
"Get dressed." Maddy stepped inside without even a hello. "We're going on a field trip."
Daya stared at her in confusion, letting the door close again. "...What?"
Maddy tossed Daya the hoodie that was draped over the chair in the living room. The one she knew was her friend's favorite because the material of it didn't irritate her like others did. "We're going somewhere. Somewhere you'll like."
There weren't many places Daya liked. She caught the hoodie, still very confused. "You're scaring me."
Maddy grabbed her friend's bag and placed her sketchbook and tiny cube with a ton of little buttons and moving parts into it. "We're going to that museum." She finally said, not telling Daya the whole story just yet.
Daya's entire face lit up. "The one with the big dinosaur exhibit?"
Maddy smiled and nodded, placing a few more things into the bag. "That one. Now go make yourself look presentable because Bosco's gonna be your date."
Daya's face fell. "...W-What?"
"I kinda sorta set up a date for you." Maddy started to explain before her friend could panic too much. "I asked her about you yesterday and she said she thought you were adorable and seemed sweet. So I asked her if she'd like to meet up again."
Daya stared at her with wide eyes, slowly starting to shake her head. "No. No no..." She whispered as her body began to tremble. "I-I'm not doing that. I can't do that-"
Maddy sighed, but was prepared for her to say that. "Okay, date is the wrong word. I promise I didnt set it up as that." She said. "I just asked Bosco if she'd like to come with us and she said yes. I'll be there the whole time and if you need me to talk for you, I will."
Daya was still shaking, not sure if she liked the idea of this. "I don't want to embarrass myself in front of her..." She mumbled. "She's gonna think I'm weird."
"She's not gonna think that. You just overthink." Maddy continued. "But if you don't want to go, I'm not gonna force you. I just want you to kinda y'know...push yourself a bit."
Daya was quiet, staring down at the hoodie in her arms. She sank down onto her couch and watched as Maddy zipped up her bag with everything she'd need in it. "...You'll speak for me if I need you to?"
Maddy nodded. "Of course."
"And you promise Bosco won't think I'm weird?" Daya knew she probably sounded silly, but she was genuinely nervous.
"She's not going to think that. I promise." Maddy said, watching as her friend continued to think it over.
Daya sighed. Ultimately, her love for the dinosaur exhibit won. "Okay..." She whispered. "I'll go. Just don't embarrass me. And don't let me embarrass myself."
Maddy smiled, helping her up from the couch so she could go get ready. "You'll have fun. I swear."
Daya hoped she was right.
----
Part of Daya hoped Bosco wouldn't show up. The other part of her hoped she did, but only if she paid more attention to Maddy than she did to her. Then Daya could fade into the background and just sneak glances at Bosco. She'd feel much more confident admiring her from a safe distance.
