"Calm down, baby." Angela interrupted his panicked rant. "Look at me and breathe. Breath for me, okay? You're fine, everything is fine, everything will be just fine."
She tried to calm him down in an assuring tone. Kelvin closed his eyes and took in a breath as she asked him to before opening it again.
"Yeah, just like that. You're fine baby. Everything is fine." She gave him a small smile, and he returned it. He is grateful she's with him in this mess he found himself. He wondered how she could remain calm in a situation like this.
"Where are you? Is anyone with you? Do you think the collision alerted anyone in the area?" She asked.
"I'm a turn away from home and I'm all alone out here." He replied, looking out the window.
"Okay, I need you to go back and check on the victims. You can't be sure they're dead. See if they're still alive." Her voice was steady as she tried to calm her rising heart. She needs to stay strong for him. The last thing he needs right now is for her to panic or freak out, too. One of them needs to stay sane.
"The accident smashed his head, Angel!" Kelvin cried out. "His brain matter was everywhere, with a disfigured face." He choked on a sob, unable to hold it in anymore.
"It was everywhere, Angela! I'm a murderer!!" He shouted.
He looked so scared that the image of the scene played in his head. Kelvin sat in his car, but he could still see the fear in his eyes. The rain made the scene even more gruesome. What will happen next scared Kelvin when people find out what he has done? He is in his late thirties and he has his whole life ahead of him. He can't spend the rest of his life in jail.
Kelvin grabbed his head again. He was in deep trouble and confused. The police will kill him for killing someone. Or life for a life according to the law. If he's lucky, the judge may sentence Kelvin to life imprisonment.
"Oh my God!" Angela's strangled sob brought him out of his thoughts.
"And the boy?" She asked.
"I don't know Angel. He was still breathing when I got to the scene. He even lifted a hand at me, but it dropped a few seconds later, and then nothing. I was too scared and frozen to check. I panicked and ran back to the car. I killed two people Angel!" He sobbed. "A man and a child! He should be around twelve or thirteen. He had his whole life ahead of him and I snatched it away. I'm a murderer Angel! I deserve to go to jail," Kelvin cried out in terror. Broken and vulnerable.
"No, you're not. You're a good person, Kelvin! You won't go to jail. It was an accident." She tried to console him.
"Was there any witness?" She asked, and he shook his head no.
"Good. You need to get out of there fast before anyone finds out. No one should meet you there, Honey! Come home right away!" She demanded.
Kelvin nodded his head and fumbled with his car keys, trying to find the ignition.
"I don't even know if the car will work! It was smoking bad earlier." He muttered with a sniff, shaken by the incident.
"If it doesn't work, then you have to abandon it. Take out the plate number and whatever documents and personal items you have in the car! Hurry, Kelvin, I can drive out and meet you halfway." She advised.
Kelvin took some courage from her words and put the keys in the ignition. He started the car and was happy it started up like nothing happened.
"It's working Angel, it's working!" He said excitedly and Angela smiled at him.
"Great. Now get the hell out of there as fast as you can, Kelvin. Come home."
Kelvin nodded and drove away from the scene without a gaze back.
